Veteran Albanian Macedonian Leader, Arben Xhaferi, Dies :: Balkan ...

Arben Xhaferi

The death of the veteran politician was confirmed by the Skopje Neurosurgery Clinic, where he was hospitalized, as well as by his party.

?We took all necessary measures but unfortunately the worst happened,? Slobodan Damjanovski, a doctor at the clinic, told the media.

Xhaferi was born in 1948 in northwestern town of Tetovo and was a philosophy graduate.

Xhaferi led the DPA from its formation in 1997 until 2007 when he stepped down to be replaced by his long-standing political associate Menduh Thaci.

His decision to step down was largely a result of his worsening struggle with Parkinson?s disease.

During his political carrier,? Xhaferi was a passionate advocate of the rights of ethnic Albanians who make up about a quarter of the population of Macedonia.

During the 1990s, the first decade of Macedonian independence, he was demanded changes to the preambule of the Macedonian constitution, which offended most Albanians by failing to mention them.

This and other controversial ideas earned him the reputation of a radical nationalist in some circles.
