When you?re shopping for a home, one thing that many people overlook is the need to accommodate additional family members in the home. Do you have a close family that will want to visit often and expect somewhere to stay? Or do you have aging parents who may need to move in with your family a few years down the road? Think about your long-term family situation and your need and ability to accommodate guests when you?re buying a home.
Will Friends and Family Visit You?
If you?ve bought a home far away from the rest of your family, it?s not uncommon for you and your family to visit one another. Maybe sometimes you?ll go visit your family. But maybe sometimes your family and friends will visit you. Do you have a close family who will expect to visit often? What about kids ? if you?re having children, will your parents want to visit and stay with the grandkids frequently?
Think realistically about your need and ability to accommodate visitors when you buy your home. If you expect frequent visitors, think about the home?s layout. Where is the guest room situated? Does it have its own en-suite bathroom? These kinds of considerations might influence your decision about which home to buy.
Will Other People be Coming to Live With You?
It?s not uncommon for aging parents to move in with children later in life. This may be to save money on a retirement income, or it may be because aging parents aren?t able to fully manage their own affairs. If you?ve got an aging parent, do you expect your parent to move in with your family at some point? Is this a possibility you?ve discussed with your spouse? If it is, you should think about having an extra person in your household, and how the home?s layout will work for you. A home with a mother-in-law apartment might be a great option for this kind of situation. Make sure you examine your future living situation in detail before you start the home shopping process.
