SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) ? Before he scripted the first adventures of Spider-Man and the Fantastic Four, a young Stan Lee launched his career in comic books as a lowly sidekick. To hear Lee tell it, the artists he worked for as a teenage assistant in 1940 might as well have dubbed him the Anonymous Eraser-Boy.

"They gave me a big eraser and I had to go over the pages to make sure the pencil marks didn't show," after artists finished their drawings in black ink, Lee said Wednesday as he revealed this to an awe-struck classroom of art students on the Georgia coast. "You guys are actually drawing. I never got past erasing."

It doesn't take a comics geek to know Lee leaped beyond erasing to became the head writer and editor of Marvel Comics in the 1960s, when his collaborations with artists unleashed the Incredible Hulk, the X-Men and Iron Man among a seemingly endless parade of superheroes. Half a century later, at age 89, Lee is arguably comics' biggest superstar. He also remains a font of inspiration to Hollywood ? which finally has the technology to recreate Lee's wildest ideas ? and to a new generation of comic book artists.

It was the movies that brought Lee to Georgia, where Tuesday night he received an award at the Savannah Film Festival. But as "The Amazing Spider-Man" was screened Wednesday, Lee slipped away to hobnob with students at the Savannah College of Art and Design.

"It's not a throne?" Lee quipped as he sat in a plastic chair at the head of a table surrounded by 11 students, each one with broadsheets pages of their works-in-progress, bottles of ink and an iPad.

If Lee himself possessed a superpower, it would be his ability to conquer the generation gap. The young artists he met seem as familiar with Lee as they are with his costumed heroes.

"You see Stan Lee and everyone knows who he is," said art student Dan Glasl. "Every kid has this part of their life where they're this awkward, geeky sort of kid. And Spider-Man is the character every kid can put themselves into."

Quizzed about the early days at Marvel and the source of his ideas, Lee's answers were rarely glamorous. At parties, Lee said, he would often tell people he was a writer ? or a magazine writer if they pushed for details. And like Spider-Man, who after battling Doctor Octopus would resume worrying about how to pay Aunt May's bills, Lee said making a living was always a chief concern.

"We just hoped that a book we were drawing would sell so we could keep our jobs and pay the rent," he said. "We never for one minute thought there would be schools where they teach this."

Lee kept things light and lively, generously pouring over pages of students' art and heaping praise on them. "Oh, man, that's all we need is a lot more competition." When the talk turned to digital comics created for tablets and smartphones he groaned, "Boy, do I feel like a caveman."

Lee caught 25-year-old student Jen Hickman off guard when he appeared in the door of a room where she was drawing in her Halloween costume. She came to school dressed as a certain bat-eared, caped crusader who belongs to Marvel's biggest competitor, DC Comics.

"You're a Batman fan, obviously," Lee told Hickman. "I'm not talking to you."

Lee and his handlers left just before classes ended.

Students clutching backpacks rushed to the door. "Is Stan outside? Is he standing outside?" Then they ran outside to wave at the tinted windows of the shuttle bus taking Lee to his next stop.

Anthony Fisher, who heads the Savannah art college's sequential art department, said he suspects his students relate both to the timelessness of Lee's comic book characters and to the creator's bottomless enthusiasm. Though Lee turns 90 this December, he still heads up POW! Entertainment ? a company that creates characters ready to spin off into movies, TV shows and comics.

"Stan's passionate really about story and character and that never dies over time," Fisher said. "I think when he meets the younger generation, he sees their passion and their drive and he just feeds off of it."

While Hollywood can now realistically render the most eye-popping superpowers and epic battles, Lee said he doesn't see comic books fading into obscurity.

"Whether it'll be on the printed page or on an iPhone screen or an iPad ? there are so many places they can go," Lee said. "But I think with comics there's something about drawings mixed with dialogue that people enjoy. The comic book format, people enjoy that. And I think it'll be around a long time."

Tori Amos puts new spin on old songs for "Gold Dust"

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Tori Amos has been performing in bars and clubs since the age of 13, but the pianist-singer-songwriter's new tour and album mark 20 years since her breakthrough solo debut album "Little Earthquakes".

Throughout October, Amos, 49, has been touring with songs from her new album "Gold Dust", which reinterprets hits from the past two decades, accompanied by the Metropole Orchestra. The album, released October 2, follows her 2011 song cycle "Night of Hunters", also inspired by classical music.

Amos, a classically trained musician, talked to Reuters about "Gold Dust" and how she has forged new paths for American singer-songwriters.

Q. How difficult was it recording and touring with "Gold Dust" and playing with all these different orchestras?

A. "It's been a thrilling journey - I have had to really learn that an orchestra is an entity - it's a creature. I have been calling it the dragon and the conductor is the dragon tamer. And you just have to ... ride and don't let go and you will be fine.

"So it's a tango, it's pushing and pulling and answering each other and inspiring each other. And that's really where the love affair comes from 'Gold Dust.'

Q. Was it tricky to re-record and reinterpret old songs?

A. "I had to realize that you are going to look at songs that you might have known for the last 20 years. You also have to look at who they were when you first met them, and who they have become. So much of the songs on 'Gold Dust' now have a lineage because of other people's experiences, and people stopping me, having a conversation with me ... in a coffee shop or in an airport or at the stage door and telling me their experience with the song."

Q. Can you give an example of how the meaning of one song has changed for you 20 years later?

A. "Well 'Winter', when I wrote it, was very much from the viewpoint of going back to when I was a little girl, and running through the snow to catch up to my grandfather, or my father. ... But as I was recording this particular recording, I was seeing Natasha, my daughter, who was falling on the ice in Vienna when we were visiting the palace there and being tourists ... and her dad picked her up and wiped the tears away."

Q. You're known for being open with your views and experiences with religion, politics and sexual abuse. Twenty years on, do you regret being so open?

A. "I made a choice before 'Little Earthquakes' ... that I wouldn't walk on eggshells as far as subject matter, and that I was really motivated by women. ... I was motivated by secrets they keep, the stories that they hold close to their heart and possibly hide behind their eyes. And also, after they might tell me their story, they might talk to me about their emotional process. And it is humbling, intriguing, it opens my perception in ways that I never imagined it would over the last so many years."

Q. You've been hailed as very influential in shaping singer-songwriting after 'Little Earthquakes'. Do you think about that?

A. "I keep focused on the next project, I keep focused on the one I am doing and where I need to expand as a composer and taking information in, listening to people. Because in the listening is where so much of the learning happens. I don't choose to analyze what I have done and I think that is the right choice, because then I won't be spending my time creating."

Q. What are you interested in now? How is your musical "The Light Princess" in London coming along?

A. "Studying the great classical masters was a life-changing experience because I began to look at structures in a different way. 'The Light Princess' has been completely and totally rewritten than when it started and it's become a different project. ... I would not have composed in the way I have now for 'The Light Princess' if 'Night of Hunters' and 'Gold Dust' had not been in my life."

Q. So it seems you are feeling somewhat rejuvenated?

A. "Yes I would say that, I would say an infusion of a sonic palette has changed the way that I see music."

The Role of Open Governance in Sustainable Development

This month, Brazilian?headlines?showed an uncommon move by a national court in environmental matters. ?A Brazilian federal judge stopped the Belo Monte Dam on the grounds that the licenses were invalid given the lack of consultation of the indigenous population. In a subsequent press conference, Judge Souza Predente said, ?only in a dictatorial regime does a government approve a project before holding consultations.?

While I claim no expertise in the specifics of the case or Brazilian law, it shows a growing move on the part of many governments to protect the rights of citizens to participate in decisions before major projects are permitted that have lasting impacts on the environment and livelihoods.

Belo Monte Dam (Photo via Flickr, by International Rivers)

As the Belo Monte case shows, without adequate access to information, public participation, and access to justice, major development projects can be shut down, disrupted, or become a scene of violent protest.

The case of Belo Monte is far from over. Before long, the Brazilian people will need to decide whether the project is an unprecedented environmental and political disaster or is the best next step for a country desperate for reliable, inexpensive energy. Though the future of the Belo Monte Dam is unclear, it is apparent that having a tribunal that can fairly and openly adjudicate these matters and provide a forum for public debate has been a tremendous boon, especially as other institutions, arguably, have failed to do so.

Beyond Brazil at Rio+20

Energy crises and lack of inclusivity in development are problems that plague many nations, not just Brazil. Without access rights?the right to access to information, to participate, and to have access to justice?voices that defend the poor and the environment are often not part of substantive decisions. This is not a new revelation, as these rights have been at the core of sustainable development since the 1992 Rio Declaration enshrined them as ?Principle 10?. While these rights are supported in international human rights treaties, and many multilateral and bi-lateral agreements, they often fail to be enforced because legal frameworks at the national level and sub-national levels are often weak, institutions are unable to carry out necessary reforms, and civil society cannot demand the rights be fulfilled.

In the context of Brazil?s own domestic policies, Brazil hosted the Rio+20 UN Summit on Sustainable Development this June. Beyond the largely negative headlines in Western media, the Rio+20 summit actually made notable progress in re-affirming aspirations and working towards making these goals into access rights. Perhaps most promising was the groundbreaking step undertaken by Chile and nine other governments develop a regional convention for Latin America and Caribbean nations.

The Latin American-Caribbean region is plagued by escalating conflicts: in Bolivia conflict erupts over decisions about the use and protection of natural resources; in Peru and Ecuador, it?s the commencement of mining that ignites tension; in Panama, the construction of roads; and in Chile and Brazil the dams draw ire. Therefore, a regional convention could not be timelier. Political leaders are beginning to realize the importance of including all stakeholders and providing space for public deliberation.

Ipanema Beach, Rio de Janiero, Brazil (Photo via Flickr, by photog63

This regional convention follows on the heels of the Aahrus Convention, a regional convention for the European Economic Commission for Europe, and will therefore have a significant impact on the spread of access rights, and the standardization of laws and practices on the provision of information on releasing pollutants into the environment. Legally binding international agreements are critical in promoting and strengthening access rights, as well as driving the development of national legislation and practice. This Latin American-Caribbean convention also provides governments the opportunity to introduce innovative approaches to enhance compliance to international agreements, and methods to include poor and vulnerable communities into environmental decision-making.

Making ?Open? meaningful on the ground

A convention process, though exciting, may take years to implement at the national level. At the local level, where many of the most significant environmental decisions are made, it could be decades, before new processes are adopted in certain countries. In my chapter for the State of the World 2012, I highlight innovations that my colleagues in The Access Initiative have worked on, taking place at the local level, where local governments have already begun to adopt practices which make profound, daily difference in peoples? lives:

Access to Information:

  • Make information on all agency jurisdictions, budgeting, revenue, and procurement available and usable;
  • Adopt local access to Information laws, providing a mechanism for request of government-held information;
  • Pass open meeting laws for all local authorities;
  • Provide proactive information on land use, development planning, transportation, waste disposal, utilities, and regular environmental quality monitoring data.

Public Participation:

  • Accept and promote mechanisms for public accountability in service delivery, such as public social audits and report cards of agency performance;
  • Adopt reforms for early, meaningful public participation in policy and planning by a broad range of stakeholders;
  • Expand the number of decisions that incorporate public participation and oversight;
  • Increase participation of stakeholders by integrating the rights and means to obtain information into educational curricula.

Access to Justice:

  • Improve the authority and capacity of citizens that monitor and enforce environmental laws and protect civil rights;
  • Create public interest standing and mechanisms to allow citizen enforcement of environmental laws

These are just a few steps that can be implemented to progress the openness agenda. ?In the coming years, many countries will pass further legislation and think globally, beyond regional conventions. Much of this work will be ?trickle up? as cities and subnational governments test a range of programs and learn how to interact better with their constituents, incorporating newer, greener voices.

UFO Hovers For Hours Above Family Home In Scotland (VIDEO ...

A family in Scotland was amazed to see a glowing unidentified flying object hovering in the sky in the middle of the night above their rural home -- and it stayed there for hours.

Morag Ritchie first noticed the odd, flickering and rotating lights when she woke up around 2 a.m. early Saturday.

"I saw what I thought was a bright star," Ritchie told BBC Scotland. "However, it was a sequence of flashing lights. There was also a darting light coming from the side. There was no sound, either."

Watch the video of the UFO that hovered over the family's house for several hours:

Ritchie woke her family up and they all watched as a continuous moving stream of lights blinked in and out and around the strange object that reportedly remained in this location for several hours near their Fraserburgh, Aberdeenshire home.

"I just woke up all of a sudden and looked out of the window to see all these twinkling lights -- they looked like they were moving," Ritchie said, according to Yahoo News U.K.

As the unusual object just hung there silently, sometimes revealing as many as five individual lights turning on and off around its perimeter, the family captured its movements on video.

"My husband is a fisherman and he's spent many hours looking up at the night sky, so he was quite skeptical when I told him, but even he admitted it was strange," said Ritchie.

The video reveals, and Ritchie reported that, "occasionally, something shot off to the side. I kept going back to my bed but I was so unsettled that I continued waking up," according to STV Local.

The sighting lasted several hours, and by daylight, the mystery object was gone.

STV Local also reported that a Civil Aviation Authority spokesman, Richard Taylor, said, "We have no way of knowing what aircrafts were around that area at that time.

"There was a lot of activity with the northern lights -- the natural phenomenon -- wouldn't that be a more feasible explanation than an aircraft or UFO? If it was an aircraft, it would have been military," said Taylor.

How to Know if Your Computer Hard Drive is Failing?

The hard drive is like the heart of your computer; it is your hard drive that stores all of your documents, emails, music, pictures and videos etc. Most of the elements that are used to make up a computer are electrical rather than mechanical ? such as a car ? electrical components do not have a lifespan that depends on time, unlike mechanical products. Your hard drive however, is one of the only parts of a computer that is mechanical so it is inevitable that it will fail over time. The more it is used and the more it stores will obviously shorten the lifespan. For this reason it is important to recognize the signs that your hard drive is failing so that you can back up all of your data ? whether that?s on the internet or via a USB memory stick ? as, if your hard drive fails all of your data will be lost and it is impossible to retrieve.

[Read more: Why an External Hard Drive is Important to You]

So what makes them fail?

There are quite a few things that can cause the failure of a computer hard drive and there isn?t a promising diagnosis on any of them. Logical failures are to do with the software within the hard drive and although these problems are cheap to fix, they?re also extremely uncommon.

Media failures happen when the magnetic platters become scratched, this is also an extremely rare occurrence but if it does happen then any data that remained on the hard drive will be lost.

Head failures are one of the worst, they?re also extremely common; if this happens it is because the read/write head has collided with the platters and it cannot be repaired.

Mechanical failures are the reason for most hard drive failures though and it is to do with the motor burning out and bearings getting stuck. Most of the time, this type of failure means a new hard drive however, recovery may be possible if the platters weren?t affected, although this will be pricey.

[Read more: Maintaining Your Computer Saves You Money on Repairs and New Purchases]

Can you tell that it?s going to fail?

Sometimes yes, there are some indications that should tell you to back up your data quickly, other times though, they can just die with no prior warning. If you suspect a failure is imminent you should never try to open it up as they?re extremely sensitive and even the slightest amount of dust will destroy them immediately. If you are given any idea that your hard drive is failing you should back up your data straight away as it?s much easier to back it up than it is to recover it ? it?s much cheaper too.

If you hear strange noises within your hard drive then this is an indication that it?s coming to the end of its life ? if you?re hearing these noises then it?s beyond repair. It could also mean that you have noisy bearings or the motor has failed; if you hear these noises be sure to back your data up quickly in whatever way you can as you won?t have much time.

Other indications that you could be about to face a problem is disk errors or data disappearing. If you encounter disappearing data be sure that someone hasn?t removed it or that your computer doesn?t have a virus before you go any further.

Your computer not recognizing the drive, slow access and constant crashing when you open programs are also all indications that your hard drive is on its way out. Act quickly and it?ll be a much easier problem to overcome.

Kallis blames weather for KKR?s early exit from CLT20 ? Cricket News Roundup ? Part I ? October 22, 2012

Kolkata Knight Riders? prolific all-rounder Jacques Kallis believes his side could have progressed to the Champions League T20 semi-finals had rain not washed out their Group A match against Perth Scorchers.

?It was "pity" that the Kolkata outfit did not start the tournament on perfect note,? said the veteran South African all-rounder who turned out for his IPL franchise, KKR, in the ongoing Champions League T20. ?I felt that we started playing some good cricket in Durban but unfortunately the weather stopped us from getting through to the next round," Kallis added further.

After kick starting their champions league campaign in a disastrous way, losing opening two games comprehensively, the Knight Riders bid adieu to the CLT20 with a bang, crushing in-form Nashua Titans by 99 runs in their final group fixture, at Newlands in Cape on Sunday. Gautam Gambhir led Kolkata Knight Riders lost their tournament opener against Delhi daredevils by 52 runs before receiving a seven-wicket thrashing from qualifiers Auckland Aces. Their must win match against Perth Scorchers was washed out due to persistent rain in Durban, hence bringing to an end their hopes of qualifying for the semi-finals.

After the successful staging of two unofficial Twenty20 matches against International XI in Karachi, Pakistan Cricket Board?s chairman Zaka Ashraf is optimistic about international cricket?s return to the country.

The Sindh Government arranged two unofficial Twenty20 matches between Shahid Afridi led Pakistan All Stars and the Sanath Jayasuriya led International XI at the National Stadium in Karachi on October 20 and 21. The matches were well attended by the fans and Ashraf hopes it will be a huge step in bringing international cricket back to Pakistan.

?When you talk of international cricket, we are in negotiations with Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe cricket boards and we will give you a good news as early as next year," Ashraf said. ?I am sure the day is not far when we have big time cricket in Karachi, Lahore and other cities," the PCB chief added further.

Delhi Daredevils skipper Mahela Jayawardene was happy after his side inched closer to the tournament semi-finals with a narrow three-wicket win over Titans, however he admitted that their mistakes had nearly cost them the crunch game.

the Daredevils sweated to chase down the paltry 122 run target, before Ajit Agarkar, keeping his cool in the tense situation, took them home with three balls and three wickets to spare.

Bell dealt to D-backs, who trade Young to Oakland

PHOENIX (AP) ? Heath Bell became the latest player jettisoned by the Miami Marlins when he was dealt Saturday to the Arizona Diamondbacks, who also acquired infielder Cliff Pennington from the Oakland for outfielder Chris Young.

Arizona obtained Pennington and minor league infielder Yordy Cabrera from Oakland for Young and cash, then sent Cabrera to the Miami Marlins for Bell. The Marlins will pay $8 million of the remaining $22 million Bell is owed.

Earlier in the day, Arizona exercised a $6.5 million option on closer J.J. Putz.

The 35-year-old Bell has 151 saves the past four seasons. He signed a $27 million, three-year contract with Miami last offseason but lost his closer's job in July. He finished with 19 saves in 27 chances and a 5.09 ERA in in 73 games.

After failing to contend in the first season of their new ballpark, the Marlins traded former NL batting champion Hanley Ramirez to the Los Angeles Dodgers in July and sent pitcher Anibal Sanchez and infielder Omar Infante to the Detroit Tigers.

Arizona general manager Kevin Towers said Bell provides a right-handed power arm to help set up Putz and Pennington adds the team experience at shortstop and second base.

Towers, who was general manager in San Diego when Bell was the setup man for Trevor Hoffman, believes the pitcher will benefit from a return to the NL West.

"I think he's excited to kind of be able to clean the slate," Towers said.

Bell contract calls for $9 million in each of the next two seasons and includes a $9 million club option for 2015 with a $3 million buyout. Miami will pay $1.5 million next year, $3.5 million in 2014 and the buyout.

Young, Arizona's center fielder for six seasons, was the odd man out in a crowded outfield with the team expecting young Adam Eaton, called up from Triple-A Reno late this season, to play center and be the Diamondbacks' leadoff hitter. But Towers said the job is automatically Eaton's. Gerardo Parra and A.J. Pollock also will compete for the spot.

Young will be reunited with Bob Melvin, who was his manager in Arizona.

"It caught me off guard a little bit, I'm not going to lie," Young said. "It's all settled in a couple hours now. I got an opportunity to talked to Billy (Beane) and got to talk to BoMel. I'm excited to help. It's a new opportunity, a fresh start for me personally."

Pennington, 28, played in 125 games for the A's. He had 93 appearances at shortstop but was shifted to second base in last August. A switch hitter, Pennington hit .215 last season, including .168 against left-handers, and had 28 RBIs.

"He had a down year. That happens. Guys have down years," Towers said. "Heath had a down year. That's why we were able to make these deals."

He said he believes Pennington can be an everyday shortstop plus fill in behind Aaron Hill at second. The team also has Willie Bloomquist and John McDonald at short.

Towers said that Bell may have been uncomfortable with his high-profile signing in the Miami makeover.

"Maybe a lot of it had to do with the pressure, his first big contract," Towers said, adding that Bell "was really the first big signing" the Marlins had in the offseason.

The Arizona general manager believes his bullpen ? led by Putz, David Hernandez, Brad Ziegler and now Bell ? "is as good a bullpen as there is if not in the National League but in baseball."

With considerable money invested in the bullpen, Towers said it's particularly important to have a strong group of relievers while Arizona's young starting rotation. He said Arizona still needs a late-inning left-handed reliever and perhaps a veteran starter.

This could be a sign Beane, the A's general manage,might try to move center fielder Coco Crisp, who signed a $14 million, two-year contract in January that includes a $7.5 million club option for 2014 with a $1 million buyout. Beane, however, said he plans to keep Crisp, though he realized there would be speculation otherwise.

" I really like our outfield," Beane said. "Everybody knows how important this guy is to this team and also has the benefit of being a personal favorite of mine."

Oakland already acquired shortstop Stephen Drew from the Diamondbacks this season and he helped them down the stretch. The A's overtook Texas on the final day of the regular season to win the AL West and returned to the playoffs for the first time since 2006. They lost in five games to the World Series-bound Detroit Tigers.

Beane said the day after the season ended he planned to keep his young team intact as much as possible. Last offseason, Oakland traded three top pitchers: Trevor Cahill to Arizona, Gio Gonzalez to Washington and closer Andrew Bailey to Boston.

The 29-year-old Young, a popular player in the Arizona clubhouse, has had three 20-homer, 20-steal seasons. He injured his right shoulder crashing into a wall while making a catch early this season and struggled at the plate after. A quadriceps injury in early September sent Young to the bench in favor of Eaton.
