Samsung to put $1.1 billion toward new innovation center, business creation

You didn't think Samsung would rest on its smartphone laurels, did you? The company has had a profitable year, to say the least, and today it announced plans to put some $1.1 billion toward an effort to build a "global engine to accelerate innovation and to drive new business creation." A new Samsung Strategy and Innovation Center (SSIC) with three offices worldwide will allow the company's own R&D departments to interface with entrepreneurs outside the company, in addition to providing mentorship for new businesses. According to Sammy, the SSIC will center on innovation in "mobility, cloud and the Internet of Things." Where exactly is that $1.1 billion going, you ask? A $100 million Samsung Catalyst Fund will focus on developing components, while $1 billion will go toward funding new technologies and business models. Later this year, the SamsungCreate Challenge will call for innovators to create technology that improves lives -- using the company's own device solutions architecture platform, of course.

1. ?Plie Squats and Walking Lunges

Squats and lunges are your booty?s best friend! Beyonce does 100 squats and 100 walking lunges. Kick it up a notch and do plie squats with your toes pointed out. Make sure to not let your knee go over your toe during the walking lunge.

2. Plank

Everyone knows the plank is THE best workout for your abs. Dr. Emily says to hold the plank for 10 second bursts for the most intensity.

3. Spiderman Push Up

Get in standard push up position. While you?re pushing up, bring your left knee to your left elbow. Return your left leg to the floor as you lower yourself. Repeat with your right leg.

4. Bench Jumps

This one is pretty self-explanatory. If you want to feel a serious burn in your calves, glutes, hamstrings and quads this is the exercise to do. Start off small and increase the height of your jump.

5. Corkscrews

Lie on your back with your legs raised at a 90 degree angle. Cross your left leg over your right leg and point your toes. Tuck your abs in and draw a circle with your legs moving from the left down around to the right. As you get to the top, press your arms into the floor and lift your hips up as high as you can. Lower your hips back to the starting position. Cross your right leg over your left leg and reverse the circle.

And there you have it. You?ll be looking bootylicious in no time!

Kongregate pledges $10M towards mobile gaming, former Zynga ...

Untitled-1 This morning, online gaming platform Kongregate revealed it?s getting in on mobile in a very big way.

The company announced the launch of the Kongregate Mobile Developers program, a $10 million fund that will help indie game developers working on free-to-play mobile titles. Kongregate?s parent company (and massive brick and mortar retail chain) GameStop will back the platform as it offers distribution, financial, consulting and marketing assistance to the developers taking part in the mobile program.

The assistance being offered in the newly-launched mobile program is expansive. According to Kongregate, games already in development can qualify to earn cash advances in order to cover final build and integration expenses. The company will also provide free consultation with developers about monetization; the company says it will also have creative services, quality assurance, gameplay testing and competitive research to offer developers, but it?s not obvious if these services will be offered for free. Kongregate says it will manage paid ad campaigns for selected titles on thir-party networks, handle PR and work with various app stores to get partner games featured.

Qualified games will also be able to receive promotion across a number of platforms, like Kongregate itself, GameStop?s iOS and Android apps as well as GameStop online destinations (including email, websites and social media outreach). The promotion part of the deal could likely prove even more tempting for developers than the money involved in the Kongregate Mobile Developers program, since these combined online presences reach over 50 million core gamers. Additionally, Kongregate tells us selected games will receive exposure in GameStop?s 6,600 retail stores across the globe.

Kongregate also revealed today that it?s hired former Zynga GM Panayoti (Pany) Haritatos to serve as the VP of its new mobile division. Aside from overseeing the mobile games unit, Haritatos will also lead the company?s in-house game development division.

Kongregate is already considered a serious online presence for social and mobile games. We?ve heard from developers already partnered with the company that the assistance it already offers, scaled to various tiers of revenue sharing, make it a much more appealing company to work with than other online platforms. Meanwhile, this new mobile program means that qualified developers will possibly have a massive leg up over their competition when it comes to getting their games discovered.

GameStop?s newly-updated iOS and Android apps are already starting to promote mobile games, as they?re going to start featuring Kabam?s multiplatform mobile title The Hobbit: Kingdoms of Middle-Earth. ?We?ll be talking to Kongregate Co-Founder Emily Greer momentarily about the new direction for the company soon, and will update this story shortly. The Impact : Creative Writing Award For Mercy Students

On January 24, 2013, Valerie Lewis, one of our adjuncts in the English Program ?who had taught creative writing courses for several years, died unexpectedly at the age of 35. Her family has requested that in her memory, donations be sent to Mercy College to ?establish ?a fund? that would provide for an annual award to be called the Valerie Lewis Memorial Award for Excellence in Creative Writing.? It will be given to an outstanding student in one of the creative writing courses offered each year.

We are therefore asking that each of you teaching creative writing this spring to nominate a work, ?prose or poetry, fiction or non-fiction,??you find to be exceptional along with the name of a ?candidate ?for this award? to Dr. Richard Brad Medoff (RMedoff@Mercy.edu).?The entry should be sent by April 1^st. ?The writing can be from an in class assignment or may be written just for the occasion of this award. ?The winner will be chosen by a panel of three instructors in the English Program.
