Georgia Bulldogs Head Coach Mark Richt to Receive 2013 Stallings Award

Georgia head coach Mark Richt is set to receive the 2013 Stallings Award May 13 in Dallas (h/t Georgia Athletics).

According to the release, the award is given to college football coaches that ?strive to promote healthy, vibrant communities through charitable and community service efforts.?

Richt is known for his charitable giving and strong Christian faith. In May 2011, Chip Towers with the Atlanta Journal-Constitution wrote about Richt and his family deciding to sell a vacation home on Lake Hartwell.

When asked about the sale, Richt said that he was inspired after reading ?The Hole in Our Gospel? by Richard Stearns. It spoke of international world missions and the gap that exists in the money needed to provide services worldwide.

It moved Richt to the point where he told Towers this:

So, I?m reading this book and it really affected me. It helped me realize that what we have is way more than we need and that our ability to give is hindered by this property. I guess that?s the best way to tell you. We just wanted to be in a better position to give and bless people that don?t have anything. We felt like this was one way to be able to do that.

That is just one representation of Richt?s charitable giving and community impact. ESPN College Gameday reported in 2008 on the family?s decision to adopt their youngest son Zach and youngest daughter Anya from the Ukraine.

Coach Richt is one of the best minds in the SEC and one of the most upstanding coaches outside of the game. His consistent success on Saturdays keeps him in the forefront of the SEC, and it also helps him continue his impact around the country.

He will receive the award from last year?s recipient, Texas head coach Mack Brown.

The Stallings Award is presented by Dr. Pepper, and according to the press release, it will benefit children with disabilities and the Rise School of Dallas.

The award is given at the Dallas Country Club.
