Body of fallen soldier returned to north central Florida

OCALA ? The body of a Citra soldier killed in the line of duty arrived in Gainesville early Thursday and was met by a cortege of law enforcement agencies from Marion and Alachua counties.

Motor units from the Ocala Police Department and the Marion County Sheriff's Office traveled to the Gainesville Regional Airport. From there, the body of Army Pfc. Markie T. Sims was taken by a procession, which included Gainesville Police Department and Alachua County Sheriff's Office motor units, to Ocala.

Dozens of members of the Patriot Guard Riders motorcycle group also rode in the procession.

The service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the United Baptist Church in Reddick.

Sims, 20, was killed when an improvised bomb exploded next to his vehicle. He was assigned to the U.S. Army's 38th Engineering Company, 4th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division.

Sims played football while attending North Marion High School and later graduated from Marion Technical Institute in 2011.

His brother, Demarrio Sims, who also serves in the U.S. Army, said Thursday he plans to arrive home Friday to be at the funeral.

Markie Sims also is survived by his mother, Wanda Thompson; wife Shakeli Sims; father Henry Sims; grandparents Randolph and Ella Mae Thompson; brothers Henry Sims Jr. of Reddick, Defonzio Sims of California and Henry Lee Daniels of Ocala; and sister Lashay Daniels of Gainesville.
