Samsung renames Galaxy Premier as Galaxy Pop for its multi-colored Korean debut

Image

Premier League, Premier Cru, Premier Inn, all names which exude class and distinction, but presumably have little traction in Samsung's home of Korea. It's there that the company has decided to re-brand the Galaxy Premier as the Galaxy Pop, marketing the smartphone in a variety of kid-friendly colors like gray and orange. Samsung's also dialing the CPU down from 1.4GHz, compared to the 1.5GHz chip we saw in the international version -- but otherwise remains the same handset we've already seen. It's priced at 700,000 won (around $645) and comes with a free flip cover thrown in.

NCAA athletes can pursue TV money, judge rules

College Basketball

By Jeff Borzello | Recruiting Blogger

A federal court judge rejected an NCAA motion on Tuesday that would have prevented players in an antitrust suit from advancing their lawsuit in a hope of pursuing a cut of TV money, according to an ESPN.com report.

The NCAA had hoped to thwart efforts by former UCLA basketball star Ed O'Bannon and other college basketball and football players to claim a share of the revenues from live television broadcasts. Originally, the suit had included just rebroadcast revenues.

The motion from the NCAA was based on a procedural objection regarding the amending of the lawsuit last year. Judge Claudia Wilken has now set a hearing on the merits of the motion for June 20.

A statement from NCAA general counsel Donald Remy read as follows:

"Although our motion to strike was denied, the judge has signaled skepticism on plaintiff's class-certification motion and recognized the plaintiffs' radical change in their theory of the case. This is a step in the right direction toward allowing the NCAA to further demonstrate why this case is wrong on the law and that plaintiffs have failed to demonstrate that this case satisfies the criteria for class litigation."

The lawsuit began in 2009, with O'Bannon among the number of former college basketball and football players challenging the NCAA's licensing of their images for a share of the revenue.

From Tom Farrey of ESPN.com:

In the event that the plaintiffs prevail, [lead counsel Michael] Hausfeld has set up a mechanism for players to collect licensing revenues. The Former College Athletes Association (FCAA) would negotiate licenses with the NCAA, member colleges, video game and media companies, according to Jon King, a former Hausfeld LLC lawyer who worked on the case.

The case would go to trial in 2014, per ESPN.

PFT: Rams will not hire Rob Ryan

monachino

Ravens linebackers coach Ted Monachino is aware of the reports that he could be the Eagles? next defensive coordinator, but he says media reports are all he knows about it.

?I haven?t been contacted and neither has the club. I?m doing everything I can to get us ready for this game,? Monachino told me today at the Ravens? team hotel.

Monachino said he respects the work Kelly did at Oregon but doesn?t know Kelly personally and doesn?t have any idea if Kelly would be interested in bringing him on board in Philadelphia.

?I don?t know Chip,? Monachino said. ?It?s a great opportunity for him in Philly and it?ll be interesting to see how that type of system works with a 53-man roster and see if they can get it done. If they can, it?s going to be interesting for sure.?

Although 49ers running back LaMichael James, who played for Kelly at Oregon, said this week that the 49ers? offense is similar to Kelly?s offense, Monachino said that as a defensive coordinator preparing to face the 49ers, he doesn?t see much similar to what he has seen the Ducks do.

?Not very similar,? Monachino said. ?The biggest thing that I?ve seen when I?m watching college games on television on Saturday nights, the tempo that they do at Oregon is problematic, and completely different from the tempo that San Francisco has used. Some of the read option things are similar, but I think the tempo more than anything they do at Oregon is what causes people problems and we?ll see if coach Kelly can do that in Philadelphia.?

Monachino said the 49ers, who can run their running back behind a fullback and also get yardage on the ground with quarterback Colin Kaepernick, use a different offense than he has previously seen in the NFL.

?Nobody is similar to what the 49ers have done. They?re still a physical, downhill running team, and the quarterback just adds something,? Monachino said.

According to Monachino, the NFL team that runs the most similar offense to Kelly is New England: No one will mistake Tom Brady for a read-option running threat that Kelly?s Oregon quarterbacks have been, but Monachino said the way Brady calls plays quickly at the line of scrimmage is similar to what Kelly has his quarterbacks do.

?New England has some of those things in their system where they have some single-word calls that get them in a certain formation and play. Those things are similar to two-minute tempo throughout the course of the game,? Monachino said.

Monachino respects that about New England, and Chip Kelly. But he isn?t talking to Kelly about joining his staff. At least not yet.

Empathy varies by age and gender: Women in their 50s are tops

Jan. 30, 2013 ? According to a new study of more than 75,000 adults, women in that age group are more empathic than men of the same age and than younger or older people.

"Overall, late middle-aged adults were higher in both of the aspects of empathy that we measured," says Sara Konrath, co-author of an article on age and empathy forthcoming in the Journals of Gerontology: Psychological and Social Sciences.

"They reported that they were more likely to react emotionally to the experiences of others, and they were also more likely to try to understand how things looked from the perspective of others."

For the study, researchers Ed O'Brien, Konrath and Linda Hagen at the University of Michigan and Daniel Gr?hn at North Carolina State University analyzed data on empathy from three separate large samples of American adults, two of which were taken from the nationally representative General Social Survey.

They found consistent evidence of an inverted U-shaped pattern of empathy across the adult life span, with younger and older adults reporting less empathy and middle-aged adults reporting more.

According to O'Brien, this pattern may result because increasing levels of cognitive abilities and experience improve emotional functioning during the first part of the adult life span, while cognitive declines diminish emotional functioning in the second half.

But more research is needed in order to understand whether this pattern is really the result of an individual's age, or whether it is a generational effect reflecting the socialization of adults who are now in late middle age.

"Americans born in the 1950s and '60s -- the middle-aged people in our samples -- were raised during historic social movements, from civil rights to various antiwar countercultures," the authors explain. "It may be that today's middle-aged adults report higher empathy than other cohorts because they grew up during periods of important societal changes that emphasized the feelings and perspectives of other groups."

Earlier research by O'Brien, Konrath and colleagues found declines in empathy and higher levels of narcissism among young people today as compared to earlier generations of young adults.

O'Brien and Konrath plan to conduct additional research on empathy, to explore whether people can be trained to show more empathy using new electronic media, for example. "Given the fundamental role of empathy in everyday social life and its relationship to many important social activities such as volunteering and donating to charities, it's important to learn as much as we can about what factors increase and decrease empathic responding," says Konrath.

New Salinger book and film coming within next year

NEW YORK (AP) ? A new J.D. Salinger film and biography are being billed as an unprecedented look into the mysterious life of the author of "The Catcher In the Rye."

Simon & Schuster announced Tuesday that it had acquired "The Private War of J.D. Salinger," an oral biography compiled by author David Shields and filmmaker-screenwriter Shane Salerno, whose screenplay credits include the Oliver Stone film "Savages." Salinger's own books have been published by Little, Brown and Co.

Salerno has been working for several years on his documentary, which PBS will air next January for the 200th of its "American Masters" series. According to Simon & Schuster, the book and film draw upon interviews "with over 150 sources who either worked directly with author J.D. Salinger, had a personal relationship with him, or were influenced by his work."

Salinger's longtime literary agent, Phyllis Westberg of Harold Ober Associates Inc., declined to comment Tuesday.

Simon & Schuster's announcement does not say whether the ultimate Salinger question is answered: Did he leave behind any unpublished manuscripts? Simon & Schuster publisher Jonathan Karp said he could not provide detail beyond what is in the news release.

Virtually nothing new has been learned about the author since he died in New Hampshire in 2010 at age 91. No authorized biography has appeared.

"The myth that people have read about and believed for 60 years about J.D. Salinger is one of someone too pure to publish, too sensitive to be touched. We replace the myth of Salinger with an extraordinarily complex, deeply contradictory human being," Salerno said in a statement. "Our book offers a complete revaluation and reinterpretation of the work and the life."

"Both the film and book are an investigation into the cost of art and the cost of war," Simon & Schuster senior editor Jofie Ferrari-Adler said in a statement. "This is a truly revelatory work, and one that transcends literary biography to investigate the larger story of the legacy of World War II. Through the prism of Salinger's life and his experience at war, the authors are presenting a personal history of the 20th century."

Salinger was reportedly deeply scarred by his service during World War II, when he interrogated prisoners of war.

Family Party: 30 Great Games Obstacle Arcade Review - Nintendo Life

Obstacle to fun, maybe

If you were to poll gamers at large and ask them what they felt were the worst things about the Wii, chances are you'd hear "waggle" and "bad minigame collections" pretty frequently. In fact they often went hand in hand, and Family Party: 30 Great Games Obstacle Arcade is trying its hardest to make sure both of things carry over into the Wii U generation. We can only hope that they don't.

Family Party: 30 Great Games Obstacle Arcade ? it just rolls off the tongue, doesn't it? ? is, as you might guess, a collection of short games that you can play with up to three friends. You might also guess that the games would revolve around an "obstacle" theme, but you'd be wrong; many of them are standard rounds of target practice, hide and seek, or, erm, picking the balloon with the number two on it after the game tells you to pick the balloon with the number two on it. That last one's not much of a game really, but there you go.

The collection is given a sort of theme park approach, with the games broken up into smaller, unlockable areas. Again, you'd expect the space area to contain space-themed games and the Western area to host games with a cowboy flair but by and large everything is just thrown at the wall with no regard for where it lands, and there's no telling what you'll encounter where. Fortunately, we guess, whatever you encounter will be reliably awful, so there's that to look forward to.

The games are hosted by a dead-eyed teddy bear with a stare so cold and creepy that we were constantly on edge for that inevitable moment when he'd pull out a knife. Half of his face is frozen in a bizarre semblance of what we can only assume is the developer's attempt at "'tude", while the other half just passively smiles. This, combined with the fact that his lips don't move when he talks, makes it seem like we've walked in on the bear in the middle of a massive coronary that's doomed to go untreated.

The entire package feels like a holdover from the previous generation; none of the graphics come anywhere near the capabilities of Nintendo's newest console, and the Wii U GamePad barely factors in at all, with each of the games requiring instead a Wii Remote and, often, Nunchuk. This means Family Party: 30 Great Games Obstacle Arcade plays identically to every other poorly-responsive, uninteresting, lazily slapped together mini-game collection you've been doing your best to avoid since 2006.

Every game supports four players; if there are fewer human players than that, the CPU will fill the void. Human players can enter any name for themselves that they like, but oddly the game also requires you to choose a separate name for the bear to call you by. This is because the developers only gave the bear a limited bank of audio files from which to draw, so you may tell the game that your name is William, but then you'll have to choose whether it calls you Chano or Shamus or Julio instead. It's bizarre to say the least.

In each game you'll compete against the other three for points. This nearly always involves waggling as quickly as possible, but sometimes it can rely on maneuvering crosshairs around the screen instead. No game is any more complicated than that, and it often feels as though the developer went out of its way to assign the most frustrating control schemes possible. Some games, for instance, are races that see you hopping from platform to platform. Despite the fact that each player has a perfectly good D-Pad and A button to use, Family Party: 30 Great Games Obstacle Arcade requires you to thrust the Wii Remote in the direction you wish to jump. Not that it cares where you actually thrust; it's a crapshoot whether or not the game will ever recognise your input. It's a needless and mandatory use of the least reliable control scheme possible, which is pretty much par for the course here.

The Wii U GamePad only comes into play during the bonus rounds. The rest of the time it features the glass-eyed bear glowing creepily at you and loudly narrating minor gameplay developments without moving his mouth. During the bonus rounds the winner of the previous game spins a roulette wheel, which determines what the bonus game will be. Here the GamePad is used differently than the Wii Remotes, but it's certainly no more fun, and it really does feel like a tacked on addition to what's essentially a low budget Wii cash-in.

The sound effects are beyond terrible, as the four players on-screen avatars laugh and hoot and holler over each other throughout every event, turning everything into a clamorous, cluttered aural monstrosity. The bear barks meaningless platitudes about every minor thing that happens ? from a player grabbing a coin to a player not grabbing a coin ? and while you're not likely to come away from this game feeling fulfilled you're more or less guaranteed a headache.

We'd like to close on a positive note of some kind, but we genuinely can't. This is an absolutely terrible game, and you don't want it. Trust us.

As clunky and poorly considered as its title, Family Party: 30 Great Games Obstacle Arcade is awful. Relying entirely on the shallow and repetitive waggle that should have died along with Wii, there's absolutely no reason to recommend this obnoxious, screaming, clattering monstrosity at all. It's mindless entertainment at its worst, but, on the bright side, it might be the perfect way to cure your childrens' burgeoning video game addiction.

2013 Range Rover: The Biggest Loser

Range Rover

?

Weight loss has been the name of the automotive game for some time now, and the benefits of spunkier performance and thriftier fuel economy are but a few of the upsides sought when engineers shed ballast in redesigned rides. After all, every 220 pounds of weight loss translate to an approximately 2 percent improvement in mpgs, and everybody loves a sprightlier ride.

?

Land Rover's nearly three-ton Range Rover was a prime candidate for weight loss when it faced a fourth-gen redesign, and no weld went unturned in the effort of slimming down the hefty Landie. By replacing the hulking chassis with an aluminum structure incorporating 270 pressings, 9 extrusions, 4 tubular braces, and 34 cavity baffles, 397 pounds of fat were jetissoned, contributing to a total weight loss of a staggering 700 or so pounds. Its carryover powerplants are able to hurtle the hulking SUV to 60 mph in as quickly as 5.1 seconds, nearly a full second faster than its predecessor.

?

While the newest Range Rover enjoys a deceptively compact footprint-- the tall sport 'ute is only 2.9 inches longer than an Audi A6-- the benefits of what Land Rover calls a "virtuous circle of weight reduction" are more than dynamic; they're mighty handy, especially since the corporate average fuel economy requirement of 54.5 mpgs by 2025 looms large.

Earlier this month, the World Economic Forum published its annual report on global risks, ?Global Risks 2013: Eighth Edition.? At the 2013 WEF meeting at Davos, a session focused on emerging threats, called ?X Factors: Preparing for the Unknown.? My colleague Philip Campbell, the editor in chief of Nature, and his colleague editors, identified these new risks, which are named in a chapter in the report. (Scientific American is part of the Nature Publishing Group.)

Among the topics we discussed were: dealing with the costs of the great demographic shift, as the world ages; the possibility of runaway climate change (as well as rogue geoengineering experiments that might be conducted address it); a human race where some of us have significant cognitive enhancement; and how our species will be affected if we ever do encounter extraterrestrial life.

I was the rapporteur, or official summary writer, you can find my blog about the discussion that I wrote for the WEF here.

In the February 2013 issue of Scientific American, you can see a terrific informational graphic about the report?s findings in the monthly Graphic Science, ?The Global Risks That Most Worry World Economic Forum Experts?; you can also see an interactive version here.

As a last note, we have another WEF-related essay in the February issue. ?Imagine an Internet where unseen hands curate your entire experience,? writes Michael Fertik, founder and CEO of Reputation.com, which is a member of the World Economic Forum Global Agenda Council on the Future of the Internet, to open his essay on a ?A Tale of Two Internets.?

Asia stocks up slightly on strong US earnings

BANGKOK (AP) ? Asian stock markets posted slight gains Monday after strong U.S. earnings pushed Wall Street indexes to multi-year highs, though Japan's Nikkei dipped amid profit-taking.

The U.S. is due to report durable goods and pending home sales for December later in the day, but the numbers would have to sharply disappoint to dampen enthusiasm for stocks, analysts said.

"The heavy slate of US data releases this week will keep markets busy but overall we see little to dent the positive tone to risk assets over coming sessions," Mitul Kotecha of Credit Agricole CIB in Hong Kong wrote in a market commentary.

The Nikkei in Tokyo opened higher but then slipped 0.8 percent to 10,840.11 as investors cashed in shares following strong gains. Hong Kong's Hang Seng rose 0.5 percent to 23,691.42. Benchmarks in mainland China, Singapore, Taiwan and the Philippines also rose.

South Korea's Kospi fell 0.3 percent to 1,940.44, dragged down by Samsung Electronics, the world's No. 1 smartphone maker, which plunged 3 percent after Friday saying the strong won would hurt earnings this year. Steelmaker POSCO lost 3.4 percent.

Australian markets were closed for a public holiday.

On Friday, the Standard and Poor's 500 index closed above 1,500 for the first time in more than five years after good earnings reports from Starbucks and Procter & Gamble, the world's largest consumer products maker.

"Wall Street performed pretty well, that has helped overall sentiment this morning," said Jackson Wong, vice president of Tanrich Securities in Hong Kong. Banking stocks did well on the back of a European Central Bank statement Friday that banks in the region were expected to pay back emergency loans faster than previously expected, increasing confidence that Europe's debt crisis is easing.

Hong Kong-listed Bank of China Ltd. rose 1.1 percent. South Korea's Shinhan Financial Group gained 4 percent. Japan's Nomura Holdings added 1 percent.

The S&P 500 index rose 0.5 percent to 1,502.96. The index had not closed above 1,500 since December 2007, the start of the worst economic downturn since the 1930s.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 0.5 percent to close at 13,895.98. The Nasdaq composite rose 0.6 percent to 3,149.71.The Dow is now just 268 points below its record high of 14,165, reached on Oct. 9, 2007, two months before the Great Recession began.

Benchmark oil for March delivery was up 16 cents to $96.04 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell 7 cents to close at $95.88 in trading on the Nymex. It ended the week with a gain of 32 cents.

In currencies, the euro slipped to $1.3463 from $1.3467 late Friday in New York. The dollar rose to 91.02 from 90.98 yen. The euro rose to an 11-month high against the dollar Friday after the ECB announcement.

TOKYO (AP) ? The joint U.S. and Japanese investigation into the Boeing 787's battery problems has shifted from the battery-maker to the manufacturer of a monitoring system.

Japan transport ministry official Shigeru Takano said Monday the probe into battery-maker GS Yuasa was over for now as no evidence was found it was the source of the problems.

Ministry officials said they will inspect Kanto Aircraft Instrument Co. on Monday as part of the ongoing investigation. It makes a system that monitors voltage, charging and temperature of the lithium-ion batteries.

All 50 of the Boeing 787s in use around the world are grounded after one of the jets operated by All Nippon Airways made an emergency landing in Japan earlier this month when its main battery overheated. Earlier in January, a battery in a Japan Airlines 787 caught fire while parked at Boston's Logan International Airport.

GS Yuasa shares jumped on the news it is no longer being investigated, gaining nearly 5 percent in Tokyo trading. The issue had plunged 12 percent after the battery problems surfaced in Japan.

Ministry officials stopped short of saying that Kanto's monitoring system was under any special scrutiny, saying it was part of an ongoing investigation.

"We are looking into affiliated parts makers," Takano said. "We are looking into possibilities."

Kyoto-based GS Yuasa declined to comment, noting that the investigation was still underway.

Hideaki Kobayashi, spokesman for Kanto Aircraft, based in Fujisawa, southwest of Tokyo, declined comment. He said it was too early to tell whether its system was behind the problems.

Last week, U.S. federal investigators said the JAL battery that caught fire showed evidence of short-circuiting and a chemical reaction known as "thermal runaway," in which an increase in temperature causes progressively hotter temperatures. It's not clear to investigators which came first, the short-circuiting or the thermal runaway.

Deliveries of the jet dubbed the Dreamliner were three years behind schedule because of manufacturing delays. Much of the aircraft is made by outside manufacturers, many of them major Japanese companies who make about 35 percent of the plane.

It is the first jet to make wide use of lithium-ion batteries, the kind usually found in laptops and other gadgets. They are prone to overheating and require additional systems to avoid fires.

Investigators have been looking at the remnants of the ANA flight's charred battery, but it is unclear whether the battery or a related part was behind its overheating. Investigators have said the ANA battery and the JAL battery did not receive excess voltage.

Japanese carrier All Nippon Airways was the "launch customer" for the 787, and has been forced to cancel services ? 643 domestic flights through Feb. 12, affecting 69,000 passengers, and 195 international flights through Feb. 18, affecting 13,620 passengers.

Japan Airlines, which has fewer 787s than ANA, has deployed other aircraft in its fleet, minimizing its flight cancellations.

Boeing, which competes against Airbus of France, has halted 787 deliveries. Boeing has orders for more than 800 of the Dreamliner planes.

The 787 is the first airliner made mostly from lightweight composite materials that boost fuel efficiency. It also relies on electronic systems rather than hydraulic or mechanical systems to a greater degree than any other airliner.

Analysts say customers won't come back to the 787 unless its safety is solidly assured.

Here's how to tell Reminders what you want your default list to be...

  1. Launch the Settings app from the Home screen of your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap on the Reminders section.
  3. Now tap on Default list.
  4. Tap on the name of the list you'd like the Reminders app to default to when you create a new reminder.

That's all there is to it. The Reminders app will automatically add any non-specified reminder to your default list. If you'd like to add them to other lists with Siri, you can also do that. Check out the link below to find out how.

Traditional Western Medicine Compared to Holistic ... - Tips Health

Traditional Western Medicine Compared to Holistic Medicine
Reviewed by tipshealth on
Rating: 4.5

Holistic Medicine ? The Western medicine community recently asked the question: Will Alternative Healthcare, a.k.a. Holistic, Metaphysical, Energy or Mind, Body, Spirit healing and Western Medicine (WM) merge? This question implies there is certainly reason to wonder and/or we should take into account the benefits a merger might create. The reflection on merging Holistic, Metaphysical, Energy or Mind, Body, Spirit healing and Western Medicine is analogues to comparing apples to oranges. The one comparison between apples and oranges is they are generally fruit?though the comparison ends there. Holistic, Metaphysical, Energy or Mind, Body, Spirit Healing and Western Medicine is diametrically polar opposites without a penny in keeping, except the topic (you). I most certainly will explain.

So that you can understand the ideology of Western Medicine, it is advisable to examine the language utilised by doctors and researchers. Their phrasing reveals their belief systems plus the models they choose to be aware of how they think healing works. When observing the condition of Western Medicine as well as the unprecedented influence of pharmaceuticals and also over-the-counter (OTC) drugs, a motivating paradox arises. The drug companies declare that pharmaceuticals and OTC are able to do wonders if you are: reduce cholesterol, end depressive disorder, reverse osteoporosis, eliminate allergies, cure cancer, cure MS, calm children and a lot of other similar promises.

If prescription or OTC medicine is so excellent for individuals, where are common the healthy medicated customers? In reality, there aren?t, any. There?s nobody taking twelve prescriptions or OTC drugs having a clean bill of health. In point of fact, the harder prescriptions somebody takes, the worse their overall fitness. If you approach the healthiest people you?ll find and have what medications or OTC drugs they?re consuming order for being so healthy, they?ll provide confused look: Healthy people do not take prescription or OTC drugs!

This type of language is just not uncommon from researchers in Western Medicine. They perceive the skin to be a battleground on what wars are waged against invaders (viruses, transmissions and tumors). You start with the Victorian times, Western society has grown to be enslaved by quick fixes and results without effort. Western Medicine has occasionally provided this result. When Western Medicine doesn?t create a ?band aid? result the correct answer is: ?Sorry, it couldn?t be helped?the surgery was obviously a success, the individual died.? It truly is interesting to see the AMA reports a dismal recovery rate?approximately 250,000 people die every year on account of misdiagnosis and/or treatment does nothing reely to raise the individual?s health. Put simply these folks didn?t die on account of a health problem they died a result of the wrong treatment.

Western Medicine?s theory and doctrines forget to notice that diseases usually are not outside of the individual. In reality every disease might be better called a manifestation in the patient?s lifestyle, beliefs, and energies. Cancer isn?t a tumor, for example: this is a systemic disorder that may only truly be cured by assisting to offer the body, not by attacking it with chemical bombs or knives. The tumor is just one physical expression with the systemic disorder, and treatment of tumor does absolutely nothing to cure the condition. Your body was designed to heal itself?trained with contains the care?nutrition, herbs, spiritual and emotional well-being.

One?s body was created to heal itself provided it?s the best support to accomplish its job. Chinese medicine (TCM) is founded on a solid idea of balanced qi (pronounced ?chee?), or vital energy, that?s considered to flow through the entire body. Qi is proposed to manage ones spiritual, emotional, mental, and physical balance and also to be influenced with the opposing forces of yin (negative energy) and yang (positive energy). Disease is proposed to be a consequence of the flow of qi being disrupted and yin and yang becoming imbalanced. On the list of pieces of TCM are herbal and nutritional therapy, restorative physical exercises, meditation, acupuncture, and remedial massage.

It's Time for Laws to Protect What's Great About the Social Web

?Social media,? ?Web 2.0,? ?The Social Web;? whatever you call it, the online social landscape as we know it is under threat, and that can only be bad for users and for innovation.

Remember the days when mashing up social data was a good thing? The ability to throw together text, maps, photos and videos from different services meant that the social Web became a playground for developers to create a huge variety of third-party apps that enriched the ecosystem, highlighted the power of social media and made users very, very happy. The dream we were all sold was that the more data that?s shared around, the better it is for the users and the services.

The ugly social Web in 2013

The situation in 2013 is far more depressing. Want to use Facebook data to enrich your own app? That?s fine unless you?re too much of a threat to Facebook?s own services. Most recently, in the past 24 hours we?ve seen Yandex?s Wonder ? an interesting app that is like a voice-controlled, mobile version of Facebook?s Graph Search but using multiple APIs and that just happens to come from a major Russian company making its first move in the US market ? and Twitter?s Vine have their Facebook API access cut off within hours of each app?s launch.

If we want to look back a bit further, there?s Facebook pulling Twitter Card support from Instagram, Twitter pulling friend-finding capabilities for its service from Instagram, Facebook pulling voice messaging app Voxer?s ?find friends? access just weeks after launching voice messaging features in its own Messenger app. As Josh Constine points out over on TechCrunch, these types of spats go back as far as 2010.

Laws to protect what?s great about social data

As ?growth at all costs? is replaced by ?make as much money as possible? as the prime objective at companies like Twitter and Facebook, the attributes that made the social Web great are being destroyed.?So, isn?t it time we had laws to protect them?

I?m not talking about data portability here. We can already extract all of our tweets, a dump of our Facebook data, most of what we?ve put into Google and the like, but only in the form of frozen-in-time archives. If I want to use my live Facebook or Twitter data with a third-party service, I had better hope that the service in question isn?t viewed as a threat by Facebook or Twitter.

Now, proposing ?laws to protect the freedom of social data? is a tricky matter, but the basic idea would be that you can?t pull the rug from under a rival?s feet selectively. If you open up an API, it should be properly open. It?s a different matter if a developer is threatening the technical stability of your API through bad coding, but simply offering a better service and potentially posing a threat shouldn?t be reason to remove access if you still let others have it.

The laws I?m talking about would ensure that users get the benefit of the data they?re putting into the online services they contribute to, and that the ability for third-party developers to innovate on top of that data is preserved. Such a law would probably be best implemented in the USA (where most of the action of this front is occurring) at first, but the more countries that joined in, the better.

?You ARE the product, blah, blah, blah??

Now, some people will react to this idea by saying ?What do you expect? Facebook and its like are businesses; if you?re not paying for the product, you ARE the product.? Yes, yes, I get that, but what?s more valuable to society as a whole? A series of data silos akin to the traditional mailing lists that get sold between marketing companies, or a rich ecosystem where data can travel between services and spur innovation?

It would be better to avoid the rigid, slow-to-change world of legislation, but without it we risk losing out on a lot of the promise of the past few years.

Commercial reality may be bringing on an ugly, painful hangover after the wild social media party we?ve had over the past six years, but if the spirit of free innovation that party inspired is killed off, the world will be all the worse for it.

At least 22 die in Egyptian clashes over death sentences

PORT SAID, Egypt/CAIRO (Reuters) - At least 22 people died on Saturday when Egyptians rampaged in protest at the sentencing of 21 people to death over a soccer stadium disaster, adding to bloody street turmoil confronting Islamist President Mohamed Mursi.

Armored vehicles and military police fanned through the streets of Port Said after the violence. The state news agency quoted a general as saying the military aimed to "establish calm and stability in Port Said and to protect public institutions".

The unrest began with nationwide rallies on Friday to mark the second anniversary of the overthrow of autocrat Hosni Mubarak, a democratic uprising that protesters now accuse Mursi of betraying by ramming through an Islamist-hued constitution.

While anniversary-related violence subsided, a new flare-up hit Port Said after a court sentenced 21 men to die for involvement in the deaths of 74 people after a local soccer match on February 1, 2012, many of them fans of the visiting team.

Residents ran wildly through the streets of Port Said in rage that men from their city had been blamed for the stadium disaster, and gunshots were reported near the prison where most of the defendants were being held.

State television, citing the Health Ministry, said 22 people were killed and more than 200 wounded. Security sources said at least two of the dead were policemen.

A witness said some men stormed a police station in Port Said, where protesters lit tires in the street, sending black smoke funneling into the air.

At least nine people were killed in clashes with police on Friday, mainly in the port of Suez where the army has also deployed. Hundreds were injured as police rained down tear gas on protesters armed with stones and some with petrol bombs.

The schism between Islamists and secular Egyptians is hurting efforts by Mursi, freely elected in June, to revive an economy in crisis and reverse a slide in Egypt's currency.

The political strife and lack of security that has blighted the Arab world's most populous country over much of the post-Mubarak era is casting a chilling shadow over a parliamentary election expected to start in April.

Highlighting tensions, the opposition National Salvation Front coalition called for a government of national unity and an early presidential vote among other demands. It said it would call for more protests next Friday and could boycott the parliamentary election if its demands are not met.

Mursi's opponents say he has failed to deliver on economic pledges or be a president representing the full political and communal diversity of Egyptians, as he pledged.

His supporters say his critics do not respect the democracy that has given Egypt its first freely elected leader.

VICTIMS' RELATIVES CHEER

At the Port Said soccer stadium a year ago, many spectators were crushed and witnesses saw some thrown off balconies after the match between Cairo's Al Ahly and local team al-Masri.

Families of victims in court cheered and wept for joy when Judge Sobhy Abdel Maguid read a list of 21 names "referred to the Mufti", a phrase used to denote execution, as all death sentences must be reviewed by Egypt's top religious authority.

A total of 73 people have been standing trial. Other rulings will be issued on March 9, the judge said.

One relative in the court shouted: "God is greatest." Outside the Al Ahly club in Cairo, fans also cheered. They had threatened more violence unless the death penalty was meted out.

Thousands took to the streets of Cairo, Alexandria and other cities on Friday to protest against what they call the authoritarianism of Mursi's rule. Protesters in Cairo were again hurling stones at police lines in Cairo on Saturday.

"We want to change the president and the government. We are tired of this regime. Nothing has changed," said Mahmoud Suleiman, 22, in Cairo's Tahrir Square, the cauldron of the 2011 anti-Mubarak revolt and near where youths stoned police.

"PURSUING CRIMINALS"

Ahmed Salama, 28, a protester camped out with dozens of others in Tahrir, said: "The protests will continue until we realize all the demands of the revolution - bread, freedom and social justice."

In a statement in response to Friday's violence, Mursi said the state would not hesitate in "pursuing the criminals and delivering them to justice". He urged Egyptians to respect the principles of the revolution by expressing views peacefully.

The president met on Saturday with the National Defence Council, which includes senior ministers and security officials, to discuss the spate of violence.

In a televised statement, the National Salvation Front said it was holding Mursi responsible.

The Front was formed from disparate groups last year when Mursi awarded himself extra powers and fast-tracked an Islamist-flavored constitution to a referendum, opposed by the Front although the document was passed in the popular vote.

"Egypt will not regain its balance except by a political solution that is transparent and credible, by a government of national salvation to restore order and heal the economy and with a constitution for all Egyptians," prominent opposition politician Mohamed ElBaradei wrote on his Twitter account.

Until the Front was formed, the opposition had struggled to unite and their vote had been split at presidential and parliamentary polls, helping Islamists. The last parliament was dissolved based on court order, demanding a new vote this year.

Mustapha Kamal Al-Sayyid, a professor of political science at Cairo University, said the latest violence reflected the frustration of many liberal-minded Egyptians and others.

"The state of polarization between Islamists and others is most likely to continue and will have a very negative impact on the state's politics, security and economy," he said.

Inspired by the popular uprising in Tunisia, Egypt's revolution spurred further revolts across the Arab world. But the sense of common purpose among Egyptians two years ago has unraveled, triggering bloody street battles last month.

Patients and Evolutionary History

Evolution has revolutionized our modern scientific understanding of natural history and how our bodies came to be. Yet evolutionary insights regarding health and disease are not typically emphasized with patients.

Medical education focuses on proximate causes of disease ? infection, trauma, cellular regulation, etc. ? as opposed to evolutionary understandings of how our traits and responses came to be in the first place. What evolutionary insights are there for clinical medicine?

Medical conditions can occur when there is a mismatch between our evolved bodies and our particular society and environment. This idea challenges some of our notions of disease.

Hardly a day goes by when I don?t see patients with lactose intolerance, allergies, obesity, anxiety, near-sightedness, ADHD, and flu symptoms. The lactase gene spread rapidly in historical populations with dairy husbandry. But 70% of the world?s population is lactose intolerant, all of whom are ?normal? in the context of their environments that were, until recently, lactose-free.

Allergies and autoimmune conditions are more common in developed societies where infections occur less frequently. This suggests a mismatch between our evolved immune system and our current environment. Recent evidence suggests that the incidence of autoimmune Crohn?s disease has risen in places where the incidence of gastrointestinal worm infection has fallen.

Obesity likely represents a mismatch between our food preferences which evolved in environments of relative food scarcity, and modern environments with increased food availability and decreased activity levels.

Anxiety may have been an evolutionarily useful response ? think of the advantage of being jumpy when you hear rustling in the tall grass in an African savannah ? but now may be an inappropriate expression for our current environment.

According to a recent study, children who are genetically susceptible to near-sightedness are less likely to become nearsighted if they spend more time outdoors.? This suggests near-sightedness may in part result from a mismatch between the outdoor environment in which we evolved and modern indoor activities such as reading and playing video games.

With an evolutionary perspective, conditions such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder may be conveyed not as a disease, but rather a mismatch between a patient?s evolved nature and our particular society?s educational expectations. In all these conditions, an evolutionary approach helps clinicians and patients see medical conditions as contextual, rather than as an inherent defect. Evolution ? natural history ? becomes relevant.

Fever, cough, vomiting, diarrhea, etc. are evolutionary host defenses to expel infections, not, as patients often believe, infections themselves. Nonetheless the suffering can be marked. If treatment is provided to alleviate these symptoms, will our body?s defense against infections be weakened? This area is ripe for additional scientific research.

Like the early days of pharmacology and microbiology, it is too soon to predict the extent of clinical relevance that an explicit evolutionary understanding can yield. Evolutionary thinking has already directly impacted clinical medicine in areas such as genetics and vaccine design. Evolutionary principles also inform public health measures, such as the campaign to avoid inappropriate antibiotic use in humans and livestock to help prevent the evolution of resistant pathogen strains.

Just because a trait evolved does not make it good or bad. Evolution itself is impersonal and morally neutral.? It is up to us to provide deliberate values into the blind shuffle of evolutionary selection. An evolutionary scientific understanding provides greater wisdom into health and illness. Even in this world of technological marvels, the ?history and physical? (H&P) is often emphasized as a physician?s most valued diagnostic strategy. In essence, evolution is history. With an evolutionary perspective, the ?H? in ?H&P? can be understood and appreciated at a deeper level.

Before You Sign for a High Risk Car Loan - Bad Credit Auto Loans

What credit challenged consumers can do to give themselves the best chance at successfully completing a subprime auto loan

What we know

Here at Auto Credit Express we believe that car buyers who have experienced credit problems in the past need to face the fact that they will likely need to make a number of difficult choices prior to signing on the dotted line. But the fact is that these choices can mean the difference between successfully completing their auto loans and further damaging their credit.

We don?t mention this topic lightly as it?s based on over two decades of experience helping car buyers with credit issues find those new car dealers that can offer them their best opportunities for approved car loans.

Auto loan troubles

In some cases the consumers we come into contact with have experienced issues with previous car loans that include signing a contracting they didn?t understand for a vehicle they couldn?t afford.

What we have learned from their experiences is that by understanding the process and following some simple guidelines, they could?ve avoided many of the situations they currently find themselves in now.

Credit reports and FICO scores

Even before you start the application process, you should know what?s contained in your credit reports (you?re entitled to one at no charge per year from each of the three credit bureaus) and at least one of your credit scores (you?ll have to pay for the score).

With established credit and FICO scores over 660 most buyers should qualify for a conventional car loan at prime or near prime interest rates with a captive finance company, bank or credit union.

Consumers with scores that fall below 660 will typically be looking at either a subprime auto loan or, in some cases if their credit is really bad, possibly even a loan through a buy here pay here car dealer (although this article won?t be covering BHPH car loans).

To sum it up, knowing your credit scores and the information contained in your credit reports is important for a couple of reasons:

??? ?The conventional and bad credit auto loan processes are different so you should know what to prepare for
??? ?Applying for a conventional car loan with poor credit scores will probably result in a credit denial ? wasting time for you, the lender and the car dealer (if you applied through a dealership that doesn?t have a special finance department)

Your budget

The next step is to determine a car budget. In addition to the car payment, you?ll want to include the cost of gas as well as full coverage car insurance. By comparing this figure to your income after expenses (for assistance you can use the loan calculators on sites such as ours) you can determine your debt to income (DTI) and payment to income (PTI) ratios. All lenders use these ratios but it?s especially important to those who lend to people with credit issues.

Do your research

Next, research those vehicles in the price range you budget for and you?re interested in by visiting web sites like consumerreports.org. This can help you determine which models are the most dependable to save you money in operating expenses.

Dealer backend products

Backend products are those offered in dealership finance departments. Of these, gap insurance makes sense if you have a loan term over 48 months and/or have put less than 20 percent down.

A reasonably-priced car service contract also makes sense if you?re buying a used car or financing a new vehicle beyond the new car warranty period. It?s also a good idea to check a model?s repair history (again, Consumer Reports is a good source for this) as well as price shop the cost of a service contract beforehand.

Buyers, however, should stay away from window etching, rust-proofing and paint protection. All three add little or nothing of value. If necessary you can etch windows and seal the paint yourself for a fraction of the cost, while most cars come with anywhere from a seven to ten year rust perforation warranty from the manufacturer.

Research the dealer

Check with friends, co-workers and the Better Business Bureau before visiting the dealer to determine its reputation for fairness in dealing with new and used car customers. Unfortunately, in many cases consumers with credit problems have a difficult time finding a franchised new car dealer willing to help them ? but more on that in a moment.

As we see it

Before submitting a loan application, know your credit scores and the information in your credit reports. If your credit is less than perfect you should also check your income and expenses to be sure you meet basic lender requirements.

Finally, if your credit is less than perfect, you probably have more options than you realize. Before visiting a tote the note dealer check out Auto Credit Express which matches applicants that have experienced auto credit issues with dealers that can offer them their best opportunities for car loan approvals.

So if you?re ready to establish your car credit, you can begin now by filling out our online car loans application.
