BOSTON (AP) ? Carmelo Anthony's ill feelings toward Kevin Garnett didn't last long. His streak of 20-point games goes on.

In their first meeting since a verbal clash led to Anthony's one-game suspension, New York's All-Star forward scored 28 points and the Knicks ended an 11-game losing streak in Boston with an 89-86 victory over the Celtics on Thursday night.

"No grudges between me and KG. Whatever happened, happened," Anthony said. "We spoke about it and it's over."

Did Garnett agree?

"Yeah," he said simply, then stood and walked out of the losing locker room.

Anthony scored at least 20 points for the 27th straight game, third most in franchise history behind Richie Guerin's 29 and Patrick Ewing's 28.

"He responded exactly like he was supposed to," Knicks center Tyson Chandler said. "The best way to get back is by getting a victory, especially in a place where we haven't won in a long time."

Rajon Rondo led the Celtics with 23 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists, his fourth triple-double of the season. Paul Pierce added 22 points. Garnett had only eight points but finished with a game-high 12 rebounds as Boston lost its fifth straight game.

There were 17 lead changes in the game but none in the fourth quarter.

"When you need buckets, when the game is tight, you can't turn the ball over," Pierce said. "That's what we did down the stretch."

The Celtics trailed 86-84 after Rondo hit two free throws with 2:58 to play. Then J.R. Smith sank his only 3-pointer after missing five and Rondo made a short jumper with 40 seconds remaining. But Boston turned the ball over on two of its last three possessions.

Anthony was booed frequently but he showed no sign of hostility toward Garnett. At one point, Anthony even extended his hand to a fallen Garnett and helped the Celtic to his feet.

"He fell. I helped him up," Anthony said. "I don't hold anything against a guy like that."

The win came 17 days after they jawed at each other during Boston's 102-96 victory in New York. After that game, Anthony walked toward the Celtics locker room before security personnel stepped in and sent him back toward the Knicks' side.

Comcast SportsNet New England posted a video on its website showing Anthony waiting near Boston's team bus after the game, with coach Mike Woodson and New York City police nearby.

The NBA suspended Anthony for the next game, an 81-76 loss at Indiana.

In the first half Thursday, Anthony was booed nearly every time he touched the ball and cheered when he was called for fouls as fans reacted to the last meeting between the star forwards. One of the biggest cheers came when Garnett blocked Anthony's layup attempt with 3:15 left in the second quarter.

"I'm just trying to block everything out and do what I have to do to win the game," Anthony said. "This whole night was satisfying. To win in this building was a long time coming."

The Celtics took their last lead, 66-65, on a 3-pointer by Jeff Green with 2:22 left in the third quarter. Then Chandler put the Knicks ahead with a three-point play and they scored the last seven points of the period, taking a 72-66 lead.

"We gave them a 10-point lead (80-70)," Rondo said. "You're fighting back the entire fourth quarter."

The Knicks led 84-76 before the Celtics cut it to two on a basket by Garnett and two by Rondo. Amare Stoudemire's tip made it 86-82 with 3:24 left and the Celtics never caught up, even after Jason Kidd missed a 3-pointer for the Knicks with 14 seconds remaining.

Boston's last chance ended when Pierce lost the ball out of bounds as he was receiving a pass with 7.1 seconds left.

"The play was broken up and I tried to flash to the ball," he said. "Really (I) didn't get a good hand on it."

The Knicks' defense was solid most of the night.

"What we did defensively was great," Stoudemire said. "Garnett didn't score well. Paul didn't really have a huge game scoring."

But Celtics coach Doc Rivers was pleased with his team's effort.

"They know with that effort you're going to win most nights," he said.

The Knicks led 50-48 at halftime but trailed 60-59 with just under five minutes remaining in the third quarter. Then they outscored the Celtics 13-6, with Anthony scoring six points.

The loss dropped the Celtics to 20-22.

"We're two games under .500," Pierce said. There's "still a lot of season left so we believe we can climb back in this division race."

For now, the Knicks (26-14) lead that by one game over Brooklyn.

"I expected more hostility from the crowd and it wasn't as bad as I thought," Stoudemire said. "It's a rivalry game and we want to go into the All-Star break with a nice division lead."

Notes: Chandler was chosen to the Eastern Conference All-Star team on Thursday, the first selection for last year's Defensive Player of the Year. Anthony, Garnett and Rondo were all voted to start, but East coaches passed on Pierce.

Microsoft profit dips ahead of Office revamp

SEATTLE (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp's quarterly profit edged lower as Office software sales slowed ahead of a new launch, offsetting a solid but unspectacular start for its Windows 8 operating system and sending the company's shares down 1.4 percent.

The results mark a stark change from the 1990s, when Microsoft was the unchallenged king of computing and the release of a new Windows operating system would supercharge sales, generate excitement and generally boost its stock.

None of that appears to be true now, as Microsoft has been overtaken by Apple Inc and Google Inc in the rush toward mobile computing, while sales of traditional desktop computers are in decline.

"There's still no sign that Windows 8 is a gangbuster," said Andrew Bartels, an analyst at Forrester Research. "Compared to prior periods, where you saw a big increase when a new one came out, you're not seeing that."

Profit at the world's largest software company slid to $6.4 billion, or 76 cents per share, in the fiscal second quarter, from $6.6 billion, or 78 cents per share, in the year-ago quarter.

Wall Street had expected 75 cents per share, on average, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Overall sales rose 3 percent to $21.5 billion, Microsoft said on Thursday, in line with analysts' estimates.

The biggest factor weighing on Microsoft was a 10 percent decline in sales at its Office unit to $5.7 billion, which took into account the loss of deferred revenue relating to discounted upgrades to the new version of the software, expected shortly.

"It's a pause before a product launch, which is typical," said Josh Olson, an analyst at Edward Jones.

WINDOWS SHRUG

Windows sales jumped 24 percent to $5.9 billion, slightly ahead of analysts' average expectations, which had been gradually lowered over the last few months. That also included some deferred revenue relating to discounted upgrades.

Microsoft said it has sold more than 60 million Windows 8 licenses since its late-October launch, an unexceptional start for a product which has not gripped the public's imagination in the way of Apple's iPad.

The company already announced 60 million Windows 8 sales two weeks ago, broadly in line with Windows 7 sales three years before.

"Windows 8 continues to have an uphill battle in convincing investors this is going to be the key to the growth story for Microsoft," said Daniel Ives, an analyst at FBR Capital Markets. "It continues to be a major prove-me product cycle."

Microsoft did not detail sales of its new Surface tablet - a direct competitor to the iPad - although chief financial officer Peter Klein said the company was expanding production and distribution.

Windows executives suggest that Windows will win more people over when new touch-screen devices start hitting the shelves in coming months.

"Demand is stronger than supply across a number of key device types, whether Windows tablets, convertibles, or all-in-ones," Tami Reller, chief financial officer of Microsoft's Windows unit, told Reuters earlier this month. "Most of the opportunity is still ahead of us."

Analysts seem prepared to give Microsoft more time to prove its point.

"It's been disruptive but the PC market is far from dead," said Colin Gillis, an analyst at BGC Financial. "Even if they have minimal success with Surface, they don't need much to move the needle."

Microsoft shares have fallen 2 percent since Windows 8 was launched on October 26, compared to a 5 percent gain in the tech-heavy Nasdaq composite index. They fell to $27.06 in after-hours trading, after closing at $27.23 on Nasdaq.

A new state tax hike touted by Gov. Jerry Brown (D) will push his total state and federal tax rate to over 60 percent.

She told the Associated Press that Mr. Mickelson?s exit ?will be the first of many.?

Studies paint an inconclusive picture.

One, released in November by Stanford Center on Poverty and Inequality, finds no significant evidence of millionaires fleeing a state when their state tax rate rises. " 'Millionaire migration' is simply a myth," it states.

Another, released in 2011 by the New Jersey Treasury Department, found that higher tax rates had an effect on migration, though not enough to offset the revenue gains from the higher taxes. But migration losses "would cumulate over time," it concluded. "Our analysis of the New Jersey 2004 'millionaires? tax' suggests that over time migration effects could offset a meaningful share of the revenue boost."

"Additionally, out-migration associated with higher income taxes will likely diminish other streams of state revenue, such as corporate tax, sales tax, and property tax, as well as degrade a state?s overall economic performance, in turn associated with further out-migration," the authors wrote.

The issue is a politically sensitive one for California. In November, state voters passed Proposition 30, which raises tax rates 1 to 3 percent for those making more than $250,000 a year. The initiative is integral to California's new budget, which shows a surplus. But along with Washington's "fiscal cliff" solution ? which also will raise taxes on the rich ? there are questions about how California's millionaires will respond.

How 'dark pools' enable anonymous insider trading

While federal authorities aggressively pursue individual insider stock trading? cases ?? including an ongoing investigation of Wall Street titan Steven A. Cohen?s SAC Capital hedge fund ? financial regulators remain years away from being able to peer into ?dark pools,? the high-tech mechanism that insiders use to conduct secret, advantageous transactions.

Federal prosecutors have been circling Cohen, 56, the founder and owner of one of the largest and most profitable U.S. hedge funds and one of the richest men in America, since at least late last year, when an indictment was unsealed against former SAC employee Mathew Martoma. He was the fifth SAC employee accused of insider trading while at the firm; four others have pleaded guilty.

The complaint, which alleges that Martoma used inside information about a clinical drug trial to help SAC earn profits and avoid losses of $276 million in 2008, indicates that Martoma told Cohen about the results of the trial. SAC then sold stock in the Elan company and purchased options, ?a calculated and well-informed gamble that the stock would plummet once the news was announced, according to the complaint.

Martoma, 38, pleaded not guilty to insider trading charges this month. His lawyer said he expects his client to be ?fully exonerated.?

Cohen has not been charged with any crimes. A spokesman for Cohen said, "The firm and Steve Cohen are confident he acted appropriately."

The complaint also offered a look at how ?dark pools? allowed Cohen's firm to trade millions of shares and hundreds of millions of dollars of stock virtually undetected.

Dark pools are essentially private stock exchanges reserved for the largest traders, including hedge funds, major institutional funds, pension funds, and big banks. The pools use computers to match buyers and sellers of a particular stock, drawing pricing data from public stock exchanges like the New York Stock Exchange or NASDAQ.

While all exchanges have a degree of anonymity, dark pools have an increased level of secrecy because neither the size of the trade nor the identity of the participants are revealed until a trade is filled. It?s like the childhood pool game of ?Marco Polo,? except all the players are blindfolded rather than just? one. As a result, there is no way of knowing if just one broker, one trader or one firm doing all the buying or selling.

That means institutions trying to unravel or rapidly accumulate large positions in a company can avoid the large increases or decreases that often occur when a major trader begins acquiring or dumping a stock. Essentially, without knowing who is doing the buying or selling, other investors can?t recognize a sudden large increase in supply or demand, experts on the pools tell NBC News.

In the complaint against Martoma, investigators cite an email from a ?senior trader? at SAC Capital explaining how trading in dark pools and using algorithms enabled the company to avoid detection, and potential losses on its sale of Elan stock:

?This process clearly stopped leakage of info from either in (or) outside the firm and in my viewpoint clearly saved us some slippage,? it said.

The secret trades are perfectly legal. Only if they are coupled with inside information and used to give buyers or sellers an improper advantage do they cross the line.

Investors who have filed a class-action lawsuit against Cohen and SAC Capital say that?s exactly what happened with the trades in the Elan pharmaceutical company initiated by Martoma. They allege that they were at a distinct disadvantage as SAC profited from insider knowledge.

"I had a million dollar home, now I'm in a manufactured home," said one of the plaintiffs, Howard Kreier of North Carolina. Today, he said, he's ashamed to talk to his friends who also bought the Elan stock on his recommendation and lost big too.

What surprises many investors is that the Securities and Exchange Commission, the regulator of the dark pool exchanges, also is in the dark, with no way of quickly determining who is trading what, according to its website. Only through historical forensic analysis of trades -- and sometimes by subpoenaing trading records ? can the SEC find suspicious patterns indicative of insider trading.

The regulatory agency is putting together a system, called the Consolidated Audit Trail (CAT), capable of tracking trades in near-real time. But that is at least three years away according to the bid schedule. It is unknown if such a system could have detected the huge moves by SAC Capital in July 2008.

The SEC declined requests for comment from NBC News, but pointed to the agency?s website for the information on CAT as well as the SEC's charter, which requires it to ?protect investors, maintain fair, orderly, and efficient markets, and facilitate capital formation."

?That mandate puts the agency in the difficult position, observers note, because it has to encourage innovation ?? such as the use of dark pools -- while simultaneously protecting investors from being at a disadvantage as a result of such systems.

Insider trading by all hedge funds has been under scrutiny since August 2009, when Preet Bharara took over for the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York.

Since then, 76 people have been charged with the illegal act of buying and selling stock based on information from insiders, with 71 convicted, according to the U.S. Attorney ?s Office.

?While the toll of insider trading is difficult to establish, plaintiffs in the class-action lawsuit against Cohen and SAC say their case shows that the practice punished both ordinary investors and other institutions that aren?t in the know.

In going after Cohen and SAC, they are targeting one of Wall Street?s savviest traders.

Cohen is worth nearly $9 billion, according to published reports. Despite his massive art collection, 36,000 square foot home, and enormous wealth Cohen maintains a relatively low profile, rarely granting interviews.

"In speaking to Steve Cohen you wouldn't necessarily know that he has one of the greatest track records as an investor over the last 15 or 20 years and that he's one of the richest men in the country, said CNBC's David Faber, "He's fairly understated, he's far from a recluse, he has plenty of friends and is extraordinarily competitive.?

But Kreier, one of the plaintiffs in the lawsuit, said he has no compunctions about going after such a prominent player, given the high price he paid for his investment in Elan. Because he had no idea SAC Capital was dumping hundreds of millions of dollars of stock and even short-selling Elan through the dark pools, he said his confidence in the stock market is shot.

?"You don't stand a chance,? he said. ?You buy a stock, you're better off buying a lottery ticket."

At least two students shot at Texas college

At least three people, including one suspected shooter, were shot at Lone Star College on its Houston-area campus in Texas on Tuesday, a school official said.

According to Jed Young, a spokesman for the school, the shooting began with an altercation "involving two individuals" shortly before 12:30 p.m. local time. Two people were shot in the crossfire, the spokesman said. The extent of their injuries were not immediately known. According to Houston's ABC affiliate, both of the victims?one student and one employee?have multiple gun shot wounds and are in serious condition. Both victims were conscious when they arrived at the hospital.

One of the suspected shooters was shot and taken into custody, while a second shooter fled the campus, the spokesman said. The Harris County Sheriff's Office said the situation remains "ongoing," but confirmed that a "person of interest" was detained and is in custody.

According to CNN, a fourth victim suffered a heart attack during the incident.

It's unclear if the suspected shooters were students at the school. Initial reports suggested the shooting may have escalated after a heated argument between them.

The police, added the spokesman, said that the danger on campus had been "mitigated."

An alert posted on the school's website shortly before 1 p.m. warned students to take shelter. "LSC-North Harris is locked down," the alert read. "Students, faculty and staff are advised to take immediate shelter where you are. Do not enter the campus until notified further."

Four nearby colleges were placed on precautionary lockdown.

Aerial footage showed SWAT team members evacuating students from several buildings on the campus in North Harris County as ATF, FBI and local police searched a wooded area.

In interviews with local media outlets, students described a chaotic scene. A female student told KTRK-TV she heard five shots fired in an area between the library and the cafeteria. Other students say they heard gunshots when they were in cafeteria.

"I was just sitting in my room academic building, room 163 when I heard gun shots," Twitter user @Amandaplease223 wrote. "Rapid shots. In the hallway."

The Lone Star College system has a total enrollment of more than 90,000 students across six campuses, according to its website.

The shooting comes a little more than five weeks after 26 people?including 20 children?were killed after a gunman opened fire at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., sparking a national debate on gun control.

In a statement, Texas Gov. Rick Perry's office said the governor had been briefed on the shooting, but declined further comment.
