Apple's iPhone turns 5

Even more than the introduction of the personal computer, the iPhone has upended the technological world order and revolutionized how people manage their daily lives.

And as of Friday, it's just 5 years old.

"There has been no other device that has changed social and technological life in such a short time," said Clifford Nass, a Stanford University sociologist and psychologist who studies how technology impacts society. "There has been nothing like it in the world."

First put on the market June 29, 2007, the iPhone created a platform that has inspired thousands of developers from around the world to write apps that enable users to organize their lives in ways most people couldn't imagine before 2007 -- allowing them to get minute-by-minute news updates, find places to eat, get directions and locate friends no matter where they are. For its latest model, the iPhone 4S, Apple added voice recognition technology named Siri, which serves as a digital assistant that answers questions and sends emails on voice command.

"It's breathtaking innovation that cannot be overstated," summed up Silicon Valley futurist Paul Saffo.

When Apple first unveiled the iPhone, though, many failed to see the technological tsunami it would trigger. Some analysts called it "overhyped." Others saw it more as a toy than serious computing device like RIM's BlackBerry, so beloved by its users that they jokingly referred to it as the "CrackBerry" because of its

addictive features. On Thursday, RIM announced plans to cut 5,000 jobs by the end of its fiscal year after another dismal quarter of plunging revenue. Nokia, meanwhile, has announced it will slash 10,000 jobs by 2013.

"Both of those companies -- Nokia and RIM -- are facing extinction," said Sterne Agee analyst Shaw Wu.

Other companies, from Japan's Sony to Taiwan's HTC to Microsoft, also have failed to keep up with Apple, which now garners about 75 percent of the smartphone market profits and has sold 218 million iPhones, said Chetan Sharma, an independent wireless analyst.

Apple took its first step away from being simply a computer company with the iPod digital music player. But it was the iPhone that made Apple "the most valuable company in the world," noted Needham analyst Charles Wolf.

For its fiscal 2007 year, Apple reported $24.6 billion in revenue. For its current fiscal year, Wu predicts the company will hit $160 billion in sales -- a 550 percent increase that is directly related to the success of the iPhone. The iPhone not only juiced sales of Apple's Macintosh computers but also played a critical role in the 2010 launch of the iPad, which now dominates the tablet market as competitors struggle to match its popularity.

"Even Steve Jobs, I would guess, did not appreciate the sheer magnitude of what he unleashed," Saffo said of the late Apple co-founder.

As an "intimate" pocket computer, the iPhone allows users to remain constantly connected with friends and family wherever they go through texting and social media apps, but it also has become a barrier to human interactions, Nass said. Loaded with games, news apps, music and video, it can lead people to be disengaged with those around them, he said.

The iPhone also can be addictive, said Cynthia Jones, a 48-year-old San Jose teacher who complains she can't live without hers, which she says has both enriched and diminished her life.

Jones says the device allows

her to keep in touch with family and friends through testing, emails and phone calls, but also leaves her no down time.

"Everyone now is completely engulfed in their iPhones and it seems like nobody's talking to each other anymore," Jones said. "It has changed our whole sense of time. There's no more relaxing with the iPhone around because people are always on their phones, constantly doing things."

Many experts say it's still far too early to fully assess the iPhone's legacy. Although Apple's move into the smartphone market unseated powerful rivals, the company faces fierce competition from new competitors, especially Samsung, whose devices run on Google's Android mobile operating system.

Android, which runs on dozens of other competing gadgets from numerous companies, dominates the smartphone industry with 61 percent of the market, according to researcher IDC. Apple has about 20 percent market share, the researcher reports.

Apple, though, has never worried about what everyone else is doing.

"Apple has always viewed the world in its own way," Wu said. "Now the world sees it their way."

LONDON OLYMPICS Two Lynn News sports awards winners go for glory

Published on Thursday 28 June 2012 15:36

WE?RE bidding for glory at the London Olympics. That?s the target for two former Lynn News Sports Awards winners, Barbara Parker and Jody Cundy.

And they will have a lot of local following during this summer?s Games as both still have strong West Norfolk connections.

Parker, who has been relaxing with her family at Pott Row this week, is lined up for an athletics double having gained automatic selection for the 5,000m and also having achieved the qualifying standard for the 3,000m steeplechase. The official confirmation of the Team GB athletics team is expected to be announced on Tuesday.

As a 15-year-old, Parker was our Sportswoman of the Year in 1998 when she also picked up a Lynn News Superkids award for her athletics achievements with Springwood High School, Norfolk and England. She went on to claim the sports award two years later, again in 2002 and also in 2004.

Meanwhile, in the Paralympics, Cundy has already been named in the 18-strong Para-cycling team ? to the delight of his family and friends at Walpole St Andrew. Cundy, who won two golds at the Beijing Games, picked up our Lynn News Courage in Sport award in 1989 and again in 1994.

Parker, now 29, is based in the USA at Atlanta, with her husband and coach Sean Burris. They met at Florida State University where Barbara completed a degree in sports exercise and sociology in 2007.

A year later she was jetting round the world for the Beijing Games where she finished 12th in the heats of the 3,000m steeplechase.

But even then she was thinking ahead to 2012 and told the Lynn News she expected to be at her peak for the London Olympics.

And at the beginning of June she had the run of her life with a new British record of 9mins 24.24 to finish fourth in the 3,000m steeplechase at the Prefontaine Classic, a Diamond League meeting in Eugene, Oregon. Parker eclipsed Helen Clitheroe?s four-year-old mark of 9mins 29.14, set at the Beijing Olympics.

She is now ranked seventh in the world and having already set an Olympic qualifying standard in the event, decided to run in only the 5,000m at the UK Athletics Trials in Birmingham at the weekend. It paid off as Parker finished second to Jo Pavey in a close race - and she just needed to finish in the top two for automatic selection.

Now she can only wait for the announcement of the GB team, with fingers crossed for selection in both the steeplechase and the 5,000m.

Her main target will be the steeplechase where she is looking not just to reach the final but to get on the rostrum.

Before then, Parker is keeping fit locally and she intends to run in the Diamond League meeting in Paris next Friday - and hopefully also to find time and watch the Olympic Torch relay pass through West Norfolk on Wednesday.

She is back home at Pott Row with mum Carol until the London Games and Tweeted on her website this week: ?Note to self: Running on farm tracks is not like running on the flat fast river trail back in Atlanta. Hit the road and I was rolling.?

At this week?s Paralympics press conference, Cundy said: ?I feel honoured to be selected for my fifth Paralympics which ultimately is going to be the most important and special as it is on home soil.

?I can?t wait to defend my Paralympic titles and race in front of a partisan crowd as part of the strongest team that Paralympics GB has ever sent to a Paralympic Games.

?I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has supported me along the way and I look forward to your continued support. Bring on London!?

The Para-Cycling team brought home 20 medals from Beijing to finish top of their sport?s medal table, and the sport has brought home multiple international medals from road and track since 2008, so Paralympic selectors are confident that the team will perform once again when they take to the boards at the Olympic Park is just over 60 days? time.

Cundy, who was awarded the MBE in the New Year Honours List in 2009, won gold medals for swimming at the paralympics in Atlanta in 1996 and Sydney in 2000. He switched to cycling in 2007 and scooped those two golds at the Beijing games.

New Brain-Machine Spelling Device Could Help the Paralyzed Communicate

News | Mind & Brain

Assigning unique patterns of brain activity to each letter of the alphabet lets people answer questions with their thoughts, which might help patients with locked-in syndrome communicate

In this groundbreaking adventure into the worlds of psychopaths, the renowned psychologist Kevin Dutton argues that there is a fine line between a brilliant...

One weekend about 10 years ago, when she was a nurse at a hospital in Cologne, Bettina Sorger volunteered to help the intensive care unit staff. One of her patients was still recovering from anesthesia after a surgery in which doctors removed a brain tumor. He was not talking, and he did not seem to move much. While Sorger was making his bed, the man reached up and put his hands around her neck. Another nurse helped her break away from his grip. Sorger returned to business as usual; she was used to unusual behavior in patients still groggy from anesthesia. Surely the man did not know what he was doing. One week later Sorger ran into the same patient, who promptly apologized. She was shocked?she did not realize he had been aware of his actions, let alone that he remembered them and felt remorse.

Through her experiences caring for people who cannot speak or move but retain some level of consciousness?patients who have suffered brain injuries, for example?as well as through her subsequent doctoral research, Sorger became increasingly devoted to the possibility of helping such patients communicate. Now she and a team of researchers from the Netherlands have published a study about a brain?machine interface that could help paralyzed patients spell out answers to questions with their thoughts alone. Although the study is only a proof of concept, the new program is a promising complement to a growing collection of similar technologies.

In the new study, six healthy adults learned to answer questions by selecting letters on a computer screen with their minds. Most volunteers learned to communicate in this way after a single one-hour training session. While lying inside a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scanner, which measures changes in blood flow in the brain, volunteers stared at a computer screen displaying a table of three rows, nine columns and 27 squares. The squares contained the 26 letters of the alphabet and a blank space for separating words. Each row of letters was paired with one of three mental tasks: a motor imagery task, such as tracing stars or flowers in one's mind; a mental calculation task, in which patients rehearsed multiplication tables; and an inner speech task, during which patients silently recited a poem or prayer. Different blocks of letters were highlighted on the screen at different times. To choose a particular letter, participants waited for the computer screen to highlight that letter and performed the mental task associated with that letter's row for as long as the letter was highlighted.

The computer program could not read the volunteers' thoughts, but it could distinguish between the different kinds of brain activity associated with the three different mental tasks, as well as measure how long the volunteers performed a particular task. Thanks to some clever programming, the system associated a unique pattern and duration of brain activity with each of the 26 letters of the alphabet, as well as with the blank space. For example, if a participant's brain showed activity associated with the mental calculation task for 10 seconds after a 20-second delay, the program interpreted their thought as an O, but if the same activity lasted for 30 seconds after the same delay, the program selected Q. The new study appears online June 28 in Current Biology.

Below are two examples of conversations the volunteers had by spelling out answers to questions with their thoughts. Although the software did not always interpret the volunteers' brain activity correctly, it achieved a commendable 82 percent accuracy rate. Despite the errors, the volunteers' intended answers were still understood, as in the following examples:

Where did you spend your most recent vacation?
Computer's interpretation: INDCNERCA
Intended response: INDONESIA

What did you like most in Indonesia?
Computer's interpretation: TEKPLES
Intended response: TEMPLES

Which movie did you watch last?
Computer's interpretation: TOPFUN
Intended response: TOP GUN

The table on the computer screen is not restricted to letters. One could fill the 27 squares with, for example, different icons of foods and drinks, so that patients could choose what they eat. The squares could also contain commonly used words so that patients could string together simple sentences.

This is not the first time researchers have developed a spelling device for the paralyzed. Niels Birbaumer of the University of T?bingen has created a "thought translation device" that allows paralyzed patients to spell words and choose pictograms. The device interprets electrical activity in the patients' brains, rather than changes in blood flow, with an electroencephalogram (EEG)?a net of electrodes placed on the scalp. Sorger says one advantage of the fMRI-based device is that EEG cannot be applied to some patients with severely damaged skulls. However, fMRI also has disadvantages: it requires patients to lie still inside a giant scanner, for example, which is not exactly the most portable piece of equipment. And so far it is slower than EEG-based technology. On average it took 50 seconds for volunteers in Sorger's study to select a letter.

Presumably, paralyzed patients could communicate more quickly if they could control a cursor with their thoughts and click letters on a virtual keyboard. John Donoghue of Brown University and his colleagues taught one paralyzed man to open e-mail and play Pong by moving a cursor with his mind. Researchers have also created brain?computer interfaces that allow paralyzed patients to type one or two words a minute on a computer screen with their thoughts as well as devices that convert thoughts into vowel sounds spoken by a voice synthesizer.

Sorger, now a researcher at Maastricht University in the Netherlands, sees the computer program she and her colleagues developed as a potential supplement to such technologies?one that she hopes to improve in the coming years. "Even if one person benefits I would be very happy," she says.

"Monster" Colorado wildfire rages; Obama plans visit

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Reuters) - Firefighters struggled on Wednesday to beat back a fiercely aggressive wildfire raging at the edge of Colorado Springs that has forced at least 35,000 people from their homes and was nipping at the edges of the U.S. Air Force Academy.

The so-called Waldo Canyon Fire, fanned by gusting winds, has gutted an unknown number of homes on the wooded fringes of Colorado's second-most populous city and prompted more evacuations as flames roared out of control for a fifth day.

President Barack Obama plans to pay a visit to the area on Friday to view the damage, the White House said.

The blaze flared Tuesday night with sudden ferocity and quickly overran fire containment lines, invading the northwestern corner of the city. But officials have declined to characterize the extent of property damage there.

Colorado Springs Fire Chief Rich Brown told Reuters that he had "a number in mind" for the approximate tally of homes lost in Tuesday night's firestorm but did not want to release that information until residents of those dwellings were notified.

The blaze left an orange hue over Colorado Springs, and a smoky haze hung in the air, so thick in places that the giant, roiling pall of smoke that continued to billow into the sky over the city was obscured from the ground.

Governor John Hickenlooper said after flying over the fire zone Tuesday night that he saw many homes destroyed in a "surreal," luminous landscape below, but did not give a number.

Pressed for an estimate of property losses on Wednesday, fire information officer Greg Heule said, "We've started the process of identifying the structures, but we haven't completed the inventory," adding "there's still active fire in there."

Brown called the firestorm threatening his city - in a metropolitan area of more than 650,000 people - "a monster" and said that flames were "not even remotely close to being contained."

The fire, which has scorched more than 15,000 acres in the shadow of the famed Pikes Peak mountaintop, was not as intense early on Wednesday as the day before. But thunderstorms hampered firefighting efforts by bringing erratic winds, whipping flames from one direction to another.

"I've never seen any progression like that," incident commander Rich Harvey said at a late-afternoon news conference. "The winds keep shifting on us. Again the winds are causing us problems out here."

The number of evacuees stood at 32,000 on Tuesday night. But after additional residents in and around the nearby town of Woodland Park, population 7,600, were ordered from their homes on Wednesday, El Paso County Sheriff Terry Maketa said the number displaced people had grown by about 3,000.

Colorado wildfires have killed four people so far this year in what the governor called "the worst fire season in the history of Colorado," but no serious injuries from the Waldo Fire were reported on Wednesday.

AIR FORCE SENDS HELP

The Air Force Academy said the evacuation zone included two communities of single-family homes on its grounds housing around 2,100 civilian and military personnel and their families. Despite the blaze, the academy will welcome a class of over 1,000 new cadets on Thursday, officials said.

Proximity to the academy, which saw a spot fire break out on its grounds in one vacant corner, seemed to bode well for U.S. government support in responding to the emergency.

The Air Force said it was dispatching up to 25 military helicopters, joining four giant C-130 air tankers already devoted to the effort. Over half of federal firefighting resources are deployed in Colorado, the White House said.

Fire commanders said they have called for reinforcements and expect to have as many as 1,000 personnel on the lines soon.

At a gas station in Colorado Springs, Andrew Heintzelman, 34, said he had been on the roof of his home in the nearby community of Mountain Shadows on Tuesday trying to keep the flames at bay but had since been forced to flee.

"I was spraying the hose on the shingles and the cops came through the neighborhood and told me to get out now," said Heintzelman, 34, who lives with his mother.

Animal welfare groups said shelters had taken in scores of dogs, cats and even a turtle and pet rats displaced by the fire. Of particular concern to veterinarians was the risk that horses could suffer colic from being moved too quickly and that pets were being spooked by the steady wail of sirens.

The Waldo Canyon Fire was one of about a dozen burning across Colorado. The biggest of those, the High Park fire near Fort Collins in the northern part of the state, has consumed 87,250 acres but was 65 percent contained. It now ranks as the most destructive wildfire on record in Colorado after devouring about 250 homes.

Elsewhere across the Rocky Mountain West, a wildfire in Montana that has scorched 19,000 acres in the eastern part of the state has forced 600 residents to leave their homes, said Kent Atwood, a state hazard mitigation officer. An unknown number of houses were destroyed in Montana.

In Utah, authorities found a body in the ashes of the fast-moving Wood Hollow Fire about 100 miles south of Salt Lake City on Tuesday, marking the first fatality in a blaze that has scorched more than 46,190 acres of rolling hills covered by parched cheatgrass and sagebrush.

Colorado accounts for eight of 35 large, active wildfires being fought across the country. The bulk of them were in nine western states - Colorado, Montana, Utah, Wyoming, South Dakota, New Mexico, Nevada, Arizona and California - according to the National Interagency Fire Center in Boise, Idaho.

Although federal authorities say the fire season got off to an early start in parts of the northern Rockies, the number of fires and acreage burned nationwide is still below the 10-year average for this time of year, according to fire agency records.

Four-team college football playoff is approved

WASHINGTON, D.C. ? Across a stage stood the men of college football revolution, clad in gray suits and conservative ties, their words harkening to a time when sports were a simpler place and 21st- century money didn't demand a pro sports solution to the quandary of determining a champion.

"What took you so long?" the BCS Presidential Oversight Committee was asked on the day it approved a college football playoff.

"We're presidents," one finally said.

That is why no one should view Tuesday's approval of a four-game playoff as an the entrance to something more. Getting the presidents to four games took enough work. Getting them to eight or 16 or 24 probably is impossible. At least for the 12 years this current contract lasts. Four is four.

Asked what broke his resolve to keep football forever locked in a bowl system, Virginia Tech President Charles Steger said the sport "needed to be more energized."

This is not an endorsement for wild change. The men who made the playoffs happen will not step further into an abyss they do not want. Their world is one of professors and academics. They don't watch sports with the same zeal as the fans who live for Saturdays in autumn. They see December exam schedules and second semesters that start in January. They don't want football to become a two-semester sport.

[Related: Les Carpenter: Presidents sign off on four-team playoff system]

And they live in terror of concussions.

It was clear Tuesday the presidents see football's looming concussion crisis in a different way than their athletic people. Conference commissioners at the Dupont Circle Hotel expressed the same requisite concern over player safety as their NFL counterparts, quickly brushing off the topic with suggestions that more study is needed. Several presidents in the room sounded far more alarmed.

"For me, [the concussion issue] is major," Oregon State President Ed Ray told Yahoo! Sports after the announcement. "To say it's easy to add games, I don't think so."

Football fans might not care much about the concussion issue that is raging in the NFL now, but college presidents still read newspapers. Many of them oversee departments that study concussions. Their social circles include scientists whose primary pursuit is the brain. Extra playoff games mean extra chances to get hurt. Extra chances to get hurt mean lawsuits and a lifetime of guilt that perhaps they signed off on something that extended the danger farther than it should have gone.

"I think that's the biggest worry we all have in making this decision," Nebraska Chancellor Harvey Perlman told Yahoo! Sports. "That's a deal-killer for many presidents, I think."

Several times in recent years, when the talk turned to a football playoff, the presidents said they raised concern about head trauma, also asking about other conditions such as serious knee and neck injuries that could lead to complications later in life. The data about former players suffering early-onset dementia and Alzheimer's bothered them in ways it might not have disturbed others.

They said questions were raised when they agreed to add a 12th game to the regular season, and those worries only increased when suggestions of eight- and 16-team playoffs came up. The idea of players risking injury in as many as four extra games was too much, and so the playoff conversations stopped until something more manageable could be found.

"I don't think there was much enthusiasm to go beyond four teams," Perlman said.

[Also: Les Carpenter: FCS player's incredible catch caught NFL team's attention]

"That was one of the things I was worried about," Steger said when asked about concussions, adding that he was only comfortable with a four-team playoff.

In many ways college football has dodged the NFL's concussion debate. Lawsuits generally have focused on professional team's responsibilities even though most NFL teams rarely run heavy contact practices during the season while college teams take advantage of huge rosters and encourage their players to tackle as if they were playing in games.

More playoff games mean more practices. More practices mean more chances for players to bang their helmets into each other or on the ground. And more helmet hits means more concussions. That is basic? math few of the presidents are ready to consider.

"It doesn't take a rocket scientist to say this is a different sport than many of the others," Ray said. "This isn't like baseball where you can play lots of games."

He stopped and looked around the room at the other presidents and conference commissioners who were discussing the details of a playoff that probably will not grow any bigger anytime soon.

"You know," he said. "It's not all about the money."

That was something to understand about the men who agreed to change the game Tuesday. They're never going to go as far as everybody else wants.

Establishing credit as a youngin'? | Wall Street Oasis

I don't understand how hard it is to own a credit card and use it responsibly. It honestly BLOWS my mind that people think they can charge things to the card and not be able to pay for it in full by the end of the month. Unless you fall into hard times and HAVE to pay for something urgent, like medical bills or whatnot, there simply is no fucking excuse to have shitty credit and credit card debt.

I opened a credit card when I was a freshman in college in 2007 and paid it off FULLY each and every single month. It's just common fucking sense that you can't spend more than what you have/make.

I almost never ever carry cash and use my credit card for all my purchases whenever possible, which is pretty much everything I ever buy. I have excellent credit (750+) and my credit limits are pretty damn high.

When I hear my friends say they're scared to use one and only use debit cards, I just don't understand how they can rationalize this. These are smart kids too.

Fucking get a credit card, use it, and pay it off in FULL every month. How hard is that?!

I don't care how smart you are, how much money you make, or anything. If you can't handle a credit card responsibly, you are fucking retarded. It's not rocket science.

There is absolutely no freaking way I can fuck myself by charging so much to my credit card to extend a lifestyle that would crush me were I to lose my job because I live below my means, have saved up a good chunk of change, and USE MY CREDIT CARD RESPONSIBLY!

OP: get a Visa/Mastercard and use it for necessary purchases and pay it off in full every single month. Once you graduate and land a job, get an Amex. Those things are fucking amazing when it comes to purchase protection, warranty extensions, fraud protection, everything!

Because of this goddamn recession and the credit crunch, it's going to be so much more advantageous and important to have 'EXCELLENT' credit. Start early, aka, NOW.

Steps to Take When Your Computer Is Infected With Spyware and ...

Home ? bTechno ? Steps to Take When Your Computer Is Infected With Spyware and Viruses ??

Article by Kumar Gandharva Jha

?Hi, I recently bought a new Dell, Toshiba (any make) computer, it has been working fine for some time, but now I often see a weird message on my screen that says Warning! New virus detected! Threat Detected: Keylogger.iSnake.Pro Infected File: C:WINDOWSsystem32asr_ldm.exe, I clicked on the message fearing that my machine has caught virus and after that it doesn?t let me do anything, I am screwed, please help?. This is how I have found people posting on different help forums to share their problems and get support on virus removal.

Spyware and viruses are indeed lethal software programs that when enter a computer make it perform slower than usual; bombard it with pop-ups, spam, adult content; redirect to the web pages other than you desire to open; delete vital information; steal personal information such as bank/credit Card etc.; or lose data and crash it permanently. If crashed, you will have to reinstall the entire operating system and have to restart all over with whatever work you had initially done.? Too scary? It is a nightmare to start from the scratch for a lengthy and difficult project that took days to complete. Besides, it is overly difficult to follow any virus removal procedure without precise instructions.

There can be 3 ways to deal with spyware and viruses and clean your PC thoroughly. They are:

1. Consult a technical support, on-site or off-site. I would suggest off-site because it doesn?t involve lugging your machine to an on-site repair shop and wait for hours/days to get it back up and running. Your PC will be fixed in some time just within a single phone call.

2. Download some good virus/spyware removal tools, follow instructions carefully, run scans, and delete the infected files. If not done properly, there is no guarantee that your PC will be cleaned and protected.

3. Manually remove spyware, viruses. It is a lengthy, cumbersome procedure and requires thorough knowledge of infected files and how to locate them in the registry editor and delete them. There are chances that you may remove a legitimate Windows application thinking it a virus file or vice versa and corrupt your system. This is meant to scare you but tell you precisely that it does happen.

Here I am mentioning about some precise, simple, and secure steps (in reference to the 2nd way) that will not only help you get rid of spyware, viruses but also enable you to protect your machine from the future infections.

Instructions:

? First, stop the malware from running and further spreading on your computer, you can do so by opening the ?Task Manager? window, click on the ?Processes? tab, and then click on the ?End Process? button at the bottom right hand corner. This will end all the programs that are running on your computer.

? If you are unable to access ?Task Manager? window, reboot the computer in ?Safe Mode?, you can access the safe mod option by rebooting your PC, start tapping ?F8? key before the Windows logo appears. (booting into the safe mode will always protect your computer from running malware as it can only access RAM (random access memory) but not ROM (read only memory) of the computer

? Update your anti-virus program, run a full scan or customize scan (I would recommend a full scan so as to detect all the possible threats), it may take some time so be patient. Your anti-virus will remove all the threats that come up in the scan results, you can check the history for their severity description.

? Download Microsoft?s ?Malicious Software Removal Tool?(http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=ad724ae0-e72d-4f54-9ab3-75b8eb148356#Top) and ?Windows Defender? (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=435bfce7-da2b-4a6a-afa4-f7f14e605a0d) tool.

? Follow the instructions and install the tools, when installed run a full/customize scan from each of the tools (one after another) in order to double secure your PC.

? Check the scan results and remove all the malicious spyware and viruses that were caught in scanning.

? When cleaned up, again run a full anti-virus scan to double ensure that there are no spyware or viruses left on your machine

? Finally, reboot your computer in the normal mode.

Additional Information:

? Always disconnect from the internet after you have downloaded the tools. This will help you clean up your machine and stop spyware and viruses from further spreading on your computer. Internet is the major source of infection and proliferation for malicious threats.

? If you are not sure, never click on the link, pop-up, or attachment that wasn?t sent from a trusted sender.

? If not sure, never download any free software such as anti-virus and anti-spyware (unless it is from a trusted website) from random websites. These websites have fake security programs that themselves are spyware and malware etc.

? Remember, the abovementioned tools are not a substitute for an anti-virus or anti-spyware program. You need to have an active anti-virus/spyware protection on your computer all the time.

How To Cut Your Grocery Costs By 10% or more - Debt Consolidation

by Kirk Carlson on June 25, 2012

Woman with groceries and register tapeIt seems to us that our grocery bill gets higher every month. There are only three of us but were probably spending better than $600 a month on ?groceries.?

The reason I put the word groceries? in quotes is because what a lot of people don?t think about is how much of our grocery bills are nonfood items. In our case, there may be only 2 adults and one child in the house but there are also three dogs that consume a total of 14 cans of dog food a week. If we were to subtract that from our $600 grocery bill, we would probably find it?s actually much closer to $550 a month. And if we subtracted everything we spend on laundry detergents, shampoos and other health and beauty products, our true grocery bill would probably be less than $400 a month.

Become a coupon junkie

The surest way to cut your grocery bill is by using as many coupons as you can get your hands on. We?ve seen many coupons that can save you as much as $.50 or even $1.00 on items that you would buy anyway. If you have a computer you can go online and find printable coupons from the stores where you shop (such as Kroger?s or Target) or from sites like The Coupon Clippers (the couponclippers.com) where you can buy coupons in bulk. For example, if you have a baby and use a lot of diapers you could buy 10 coupons and save nearly $10 on your next 10 purchases.

Make it a game

Some families actually make a game out of coupons and give a prize to the family member who finds the best or most coupons a week. Don?t think for a minute that it?s not worth using coupons and save just $.50 on an item as this can eventually grow into a much larger amount than you might imagine. We know families who are saving as much as $20 a week simply by using coupons.

Plan your menus around the ?specials?

Look for coupons or BOGOs (buy one, get one) on food items that you can plan menus around. As an example of this, if you find an especially good price on chicken or pork, plan a meal around these meats. You can surround the chicken or pork with vegetables that are on sale (or have coupons) and put together a nice meal for $7 or less?and feed a family of four.

Make a list and stick to it

One of the biggest mistakes people make in grocery shopping is to do it without a list. While you might think that you can just go to the store and choose the items you will need for the following three or five days, I can promise one of two things will happen. You will either forget five or six important items, which will mean yet another trip to the store. Or you will end up buying a lot of ?impulse? items. It?s really important to figure out your menus for the next few days, make a list of all the items you will need to fix those meals and then never deviate from your list.

Never shop before a meal

Oh, and one other thing. Never go grocery shopping before you eat lunch or dinner. Statistics show that the hungrier you are when you go grocery shopping, the higher your grocery bill will be. And that?s a fact.

Jacksonville FL Home Spa Prices - Indoor Swimming Pool Guide

Home spas are certainly very pretty, classy and costly. Indeed, compared to an outdoor swimming pool, Jacksonville FL home spa prices are twice as high. This includes all of the spa design, construction and maintenance.

Also, in times when energy costs are continuously rising, people are looking for more efficient ways of heating their spa water and spa hall air heating in Jacksonville FL. You should be aware of this problem and have recognized the need to lower running costs of your water spa. You can also use modern technology which allows low running costs with massive energy savings up to 70%.

In addition, if you control the humidity of the room and you put a quality liner, you will have a chance of having your valuable investment in Jacksonville FL last a long time.
Jacksonville FL Home Spa PricesJacksonville FL Home Spa Prices

With the constant advancements in technology, anyone can have a home spa in Jacksonville FL today even when little room is available. You can have for example a physical therapy or hydrotherapy spa. These can also just be enjoyed for a relaxing soak too. Below we will be considering the costs of installing a home spa of the therapeutic type in Jacksonville FL.

The Average Jacksonville FL Home Spa Prices Include Costs and Materials Associated With:

- The Spa : the standard size of a common indoor spa in Jacksonville FL is roughly 8?x15?, and it demands a space or room size of at least 11?x18?. The cost for such a spa starts at $20,000, but can go as high as $100,000 for the largest lap spas dimensions. Most are around 40? deep and can be custom ordered to a maximum depth of 78? too;

- The Surroundings : this is where the truly hefty costs can come into play because a homeowner in Jacksonville FL without the appropriately sized basement, garage, or sunroom will have to construct an entire wing specifically for the spa. There are many pre-fabricated options for spa enclosures, however, and these include rigid frames that are mounted to the actual deck surrounding the spa. These can be found for prices starting at $35 per square foot and even in the $70 per square foot price range too. Most owners in Jacksonville FL will pay around $30k to $40k for the standard enclosure. Additional costs to consider are the electrical work (roughly $85 per hour) and any plumbing requirements (around $80 per hour); and

- The Water : for a spa to be comfortable, it will have to have heated water. One of the smartest and most cost effective ways to heat the indoor spa is through the installation of a solar heating system in Jacksonville FL. Although solar hot water heating cannot yet supply a household with all of its needs, it can keep a spa heated comfortably 100% of the time. A solar tube array for the spa described here would cost approximately $340, and could be installed on a do-it-yourself basis.

Home Spas Prices in Jacksonville FL Should Include These Enhancements and Improvements Costs:

- Dehumidifying systems : when a water spa is indoors, it puts off a lot of heat and humidity. When the homeowner in Jacksonville FL is able to use a pre-existing room in the home in which to house the spa, there can be many moisture problems as a result. A standard model dehumidifier will cost roughly $2000;

- Vapor Barrier : if the room in which the spa is housed shares common walls with the residence in Jacksonville FL, it is also a good idea to install a vapor barrier within them. This is going to require the removal of sheetrock and the subsequent re-finishing of the area, but it will prevent the accumulation of moisture, mildew, and mold that is a common problem with indoor lap spas in Jacksonville FL;

- Safety Measures : locking doors between the spa room and the rest of the house in Jacksonville FL might be part of the building code, but it is also a good idea to consider the installation of subtle door alarms and even a safety cover on the spa as well, which cost around $600 for the most durable model.

- Other elements to consider : you can improve your indoor spa further. Browse this website to learn more about home spas prices in Jacksonville FL as well as in the other locations of your choice.

Does Your Image Match Your Brand? - Business Consulting Buzz

Does your consulting website suck? I don?t know why in this day and age so many people have websites that suck.

  • The person?s name or company logo is nowhere to be seen.
  • ?

  • It?s almost impossible to find contact information.
  • ?

  • The navigation is impossible to use.
  • ?

  • The site loads with Flash ? wasting the user?s time.
  • ?

  • The text is too small to read.
  • ?

  • There is no value proposition stated.
  • ?

  • There is no picture of the person (if it?s a personal site).
  • ?

  • There is no value or content or substance to the site.
  • ?

  • It looks ugly!

Most of these are easy to address. The last one is plain pathetic. You don?t need to have an award winning design. But your website should look professional, be easy to read and use.

?I?m not a designer?, ?It costs too much for a professional design!? ? It?s not 1990 anymore folks! With services like 99designs.com you can have a professionally designed website for under $400 (if not much less) and have one up and running for not much more.

You don?t need to have an award winning design. But your website should look professional, be easy to read and use.

Especially if you use WordPress or another content management system (CMS) you can select from many professional themes (or skins) and booyah! your site is done.

There?s no excuse. A professional image does count.

To help you with some ideas here are a few good examples of consultant websites?

After nearly two weeks on the line, North Metro Fire/Rescue firefighter Brian Lefleur of Broomfield, Colo., packs up his belongings to head home for a few days as a wildfire continues to burn near Livermore, Colo., on Saturday, June 23, 2012. Authorities sent out 992 evacuation notices Friday due to the wildfire burning on more than 100 square miles in northern Colorado as winds pick up. (AP Photo/David Zalubowski)

About 2,300 Utah wildfire evacuees were allowed to return to their homes Saturday evening after officials determined the blaze no longer posed a threat to them.

The decision came after the fire had burned Friday within a quarter mile of some homes in Saratoga Springs and Eagle Mountain, about 40 miles south of Salt Lake City, Bureau of Land Management spokeswoman Teresa Rigby said.

No homes have burned, she said, and fire officials were comfortable with the decision to lift the evacuation order after seeing how the 9-square-mile blaze behaved Saturday afternoon during high winds and high temperatures.

"The fire itself is still active but it no longer is a direct threat to homes," Rigby told The Associated Press. "Most of the fire is up on the mountain at this time and not near the subdivisions."

The evacuation order, imposed Friday, affected nearly 600 homes and roughly 2,300 residents, according to an updated count released Saturday by fire officials.

Winds pushed some of the fire back on itself Saturday afternoon, Rigby said, and crews managed to put out "hot spots" closest to homes.

The fire that officials believe was started Thursday by target shooters was 30 percent contained Saturday evening, with full containment expected Tuesday.

Crews also were battling a 16,500-acre brush fire on high desert near the town of Delta in central Utah.

The human-caused fire was 60 percent contained Saturday evening, BLM spokesman Don Carpenter said, and had burned no homes after breaking out Friday.

While the fire was burning roughly eight miles from the communities of Lynndyl and Leamington, it posed no threat to them at this time, he said.

Elsewhere:

? In Colorado, hot, dry weather and gusty winds are fueling two new wildfires, prompting evacuations in some of the most scenic tourist areas in the state. A 600-acre wildfire reported west of Colorado Springs on Saturday afternoon prompted an evacuation of the gated community of Cedar Heights and the Garden of the Gods nature center. Meanwhile, a fire involving structures erupted Saturday afternoon near the tourist town of Estes Park and the Beaver Meadows entrance on the east side of Rocky Mountain National Park. And firefighters gave up some ground to a wildfire that has scorched more than 118 square miles and destroyed at least 191 homes west of Fort Collins. Crews stationed near threatened homes Friday had to retreat for their safety, and the fire's containment slipped from 60 percent to 45 percent.

? In Nevada, a wildfire that has scorched more than 11,000 acres of rugged terrain in northeast Nevada near the Utah line is 75 percent contained. It began as a U.S. Forest Service prescribed burn that escaped June 9.

? In New Mexico, a lightning-caused wildfire that destroyed 242 homes and businesses is 90 percent contained after crews got a break in the weather. Crews took advantage of heavy rain Friday to increase containment lines on the 69-square-mile fire near Ruidoso that began June 4. Meanwhile, the more than 464-square-mile Whitewater-Baldy blaze, the largest in state history, is 87 percent contained. It began May 16 as two lightning-caused blazes that merged to form one fire.

Congressman Hanna, Earlville?s Kicinski vie for GOP nomination in primary Tuesday

NORWICH - The Chenango County Board of Election anticipates a quiet election Tuesday for the June 26 federal primary.

Of 17 statewide elections, the only local action is in the 22nd District, where U.S. Congressman Richard L. Hanna, of Barneveld, and Michael J. Kicinski, Sr., of Earlville, vie for the GOP nomination. The 22nd encompasses Chenango, Cortland, Madison, Oneida, and parts of Broome, Herkimer, Oswego and Tioga counties.

The Chenango County Republican Committee unanimously endorsed Congressman Hanna in April. Hanna is also backed by the Independence Party of New York State, which previously endorsed him in his 2008 and 2010 bids in the 24th District, before redistricting.

Hanna successfully operated the construction company Hanna Construction for nearly 30 years, growing to employ more than 450 people at one time. Increasingly frustrated with the high taxes his business was paying, he decided to run for office. Rep. Hanna received the U.S. Chamber of Commerce?s Spirit of Enterprise Award in recognition of his voting record in the House. In his two years in office, the Congressman has compiled a moderate voting record for a Republican. Progressive Punch ranks him the 205th most progressive representative based on critical votes, which places him to the left of all but 14 Republicans. He serves on three House committees: Education and the Workforce, Small Business, and Transportation and Infrastructure.

Mortgage Fraud Blog - Real Estate Agent Sentenced for Mortgage ...

Vickie Kay Lind, 48, Branson, Missouri, a real estate agent, has been sentenced in federal court for her role in a $391,519 mortgage fraud scheme.

As previously reported on Mortgage Fraud Blog, on October 28, 2011, Lind pleaded guilty to participating in a wire fraud conspiracy and a money laundering conspiracy from August 1 to October 3, 2005. In addition to the two conspiracies, Lind pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud and one count of money laundering.

Lind, a realtor who did business as My Realty Company LLC, defrauded First Magnus Financial Corporation in Overland Park, Kansas, by submitting fraudulent documentation in order to obtain $391,519 in mortgage loans for an Ozark, Missouri, residence.

In order to obtain the loans, Lind provided false documentation that an individual was leasing the property for $3,500 per month. First Magnus Financial Corporation approved the buyer's loan application on the strength of the $3,500 per month lease agreement. First Magnus would not have approved the loan application without this lease agreement, because the buyer's debt to income ratio was too high.

Without the lender's knowledge, Lind obtained $70,000 from the loan proceeds, while the seller of the property only received approximately $310,000. Lind submitted fraudulent invoices for work allegedly performed by two companies, Elite Home Alliance and Gold Pointe Homes. In reality, neither company performed any work to justify these payments. Elite Home Alliance, Lind's own company, received $25,000, which Lind used for her own benefit. Gold Pointe Homes received $45,000, which was used to repay a loan made by a friend in Arizona to the buyer, which allowed Lind to live in the residence rent free, until it could be sold for a profit. Lind also received the real estate commissions on the sale of the home.

Lind declared bankruptcy in October 2005. The buyer could not make the monthly mortgage payments, nor could he sell the residence, and the property went into foreclosure. As a result, First Magnus Financial Corporation lost $70,426.

David M. Ketchmark, Acting United States Attorney for the Western District of Missouri made the announcement.

Branson was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Richard E. Dorr to 18 months in federal prison without parole. The court also ordered Lind to pay $70,426 in restitution.

This case was prosecuted by Supervisory Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael S. Oliver. It was investigated by IRS-Criminal Investigation and the FBI.
