Evernote, Twitter and Facebook apps for Google Glass announced

Glass, Twitter

Major players get official apps for Google's smart glasses

Following the start of this year's Google I/O developer conference, Evernote, Twitter and Facebook have announced official apps for Google Glass. If you're among the lucky few people packing "explorer edition" Glass devices, you can turn on these new applications by heading to your MyGlass page at google.com/myglass and enabling the app you want.

While the Facebook app for Glass is primarily focused on sharing pictures you've taken on the device, the Twitter app offers much of the functionality of a full-blown Twitter app, including the ability to send and receive regular tweets, images retweets and direct messages. (You might remember Twitter for Glass has been rumored for some time.)

Evernote, on the other hand, focuses on quickly added photo or video snippets to your notes, and sending existing notes to your Glass timeline, so it's always within view. These are small first steps, but it's early days for Glass, and we can't wait to see what developers come up with in the months ahead.

If you're rocking Glass already, be sure to hit the comments and share your thoughts on these new apps.

Small businesses need the Keystone Pipeline | The Daily Caller

Small business owners are concerned about the threat of rising fuel and energy costs. According to a U.S. Chamber of Commerce survey, 77 percent of them say that rising energy prices pose an immediate threat to their business. Small business owners are also worried about the lack of business opportunities in this sluggish economy. The Chamber?s survey shows that 80 percent feel that the administration is not doing enough to keep gas prices low, increase domestic energy sources, or develop an energy policy that supports American jobs. The federal government can do a number of things to ease these concerns but one in particular stands out from the rest.

The Keystone XL Pipeline, which would run from the tar sands of Alberta to the refineries of the American Gulf Coast, would go a long way toward addressing many of the challenges facing small business owners. But TransCanada Keystone LP, the company that?s trying to build the pipeline, can?t begin construction until it gets a permit from the State Department. There lies the debate, which focuses on whether the permit for the pipeline would ?serve the national interest.?

The term ?serve the national interest,? as it appears in the series of executive orders that govern the construction of pipelines, is not defined by the president?s orders or any statute, leaving the determination in the sole discretion of the State Department.

Considering the weak economy, it?s not hard to see what the ?national interest? is in this case. The pipeline would lower oil prices, create thousands of jobs, make America less dependent on foreign sources of energy, and help stabilize oil prices.

TransCanada?s initial proposal, made in 2008, called for the pipeline to travel through the Sandhills region of Nebraska. But, in the face of questions about the pipeline?s potential impact on the region, TransCanada submitted a new proposal rerouting the pipeline around Sandhills. From top to bottom, the project would have a minimal environmental impact.

Business and labor groups stand behind the Keystone XL Pipeline and the opportunities it promises to create. Sean McGarvey, of the AFL-CIO, the largest federation of unions in the United States, has remarked, ?We are tired of waiting and we believe the time has come to make the final decision on one of the most important projects to unlock the energy future for this country ? the Keystone XL Pipeline.? The pipeline is a $7 billion investment that is expected to create 20,000 jobs directly and another 22,000 jobs indirectly over the project?s construction period. The Canadian Energy Research Institute estimates that the pipeline will add $172 billion to America?s gross domestic product by 2035.?Even the State Department recently estimated that approximately 42,100 jobs would be created over the project construction period.

On Thursday, the Small Business Subcommittee on Agriculture, Energy and Trade, which I chair, is holding a hearing on the benefits of the Keystone XL Pipeline for small companies. While individual studies are not broken down into large vs. small business, TransCanada states it has contracts with more than 50 suppliers across the U.S. The majority of suppliers that do this type of work are small businesses.

A whopping 99.7% of the businesses in America are small businesses. Small business owners overwhelmingly favor aggressive energy exploration, as they believe it would boost the economy. The Keystone XL Pipeline is an economic catalyst that will serve the national interest at a pivotal moment. The administration should allow the project to move forward.

Rep. Scott Tipton, a Republican from Colorado, is the chairman of the Small Business Subcommittee on Agriculture, Energy and Trade.

Nokia making Smart Camera app available with Amber software update

Jealous of the Lumia 925's flashy new imaging software? At Nokia's London event, Jo Harlow has promised that other Lumia owners won't be left out in the cold. The company will be pushing out "Amber," an update that'll bring Smart Cam, amongst other apps, to the company's wider range of Windows Phone 8 devices. There's no word on when Amber will actually arrive beyond a vague mention of "summer," but the company hopes it'll be ready in time for your next vacation.

'Dancing With the Stars' reveals its final 4

TV

ABC

It was the end of the road to mirror ball glory for Kym Johnson and Ingo Rademacher on Tuesday.

On the night of its 300th episode, "Dancing With the Stars" revealed its season 16 finalists with little fanfare. But what was there to celebrate, really? Just earlier in the day, ABC had announced that next season, the very results show that aired Tuesday night would be a thing of the past, wrapped into a two-hour extravaganza that will take place only on Mondays. (Not that "DWTS" addressed this development.)

But the (existing) show must go on, so the ballroom bash drummed up what little drama it could with the couples it put under the spotlights of shame: "General Hospital" actor Ingo Rademacher and partner Kym Johnson, and Disney star Zendaya and pro Valentin Chmerkovskiy. Yes, Zendaya, the teen who has ruled the scoreboard since the first day of the season, was in jeopardy.

When the in-studio audience heard the news, their boos were long and loud. After all, Monday's senseless scoring had possibly contributed to her current predicament. After delivering a high-speed quickstep that wasn't quite as good as she usually is (and it certainly wasn't bad), Zendaya received a smackdown from the judges in the form of a 25-point score. That was just 1 point higher than Ingo's sloppy samba that happened to be his best dance of the season.

But the teen didn't need to worry for long. As the show prepared to the reveal the results, co-host Brooke Burke noted that the couples awaiting their fates were "not necessarily the bottom two." (You don't say!) The results were as many -- including Ingo -- had predicted: The soap star had fallen just one week shy of the finale.

"If I don?t go home ... somebody else is going to be very upset," Ingo had told the cameras after Monday's performance show.

The soap star was gracious in his exit. "This has been an amazing experience because I thought I?d be done in like, two weeks," he said after his elimination. "Kym has choreographed the most amazing routines and catered them to my two left feet."

As for the final four of Zendaya, Kellie Pickler, Aly Raisman and Jacoby Jones, "I really want to see them battle it out because I think it?s really close competition," Ingo said.

That finale battle next week will have three rounds of competition, including what host Tom Bergeron called a "supersized freestyle," as well as "all sorts of tricks."

US, Russia and Iran to wrestle in New York

The governments of the United States and Russia can sometimes be at odds.

Americans and Iranians rarely see eye to eye on anything.

But the possibility of wrestling losing its Olympic spot has given these three often-divergent nations a cause to rally around.

The U.S., Russian and Iranian wrestling teams will meet on Wednesday for an historic exhibition in New York. It's a showcase event for what the sport's international governing body has dubbed "World Wrestling Month."

The IOC in February recommended that wrestling be dropped from the Olympic program starting in 2020. Wrestling now has to plead its case to the IOC to be included as a provisional sport in St. Petersburg, Russia on May 29.

The New York exhibition, known as "The Rumble on the Rails" and to be held at Grand Central Terminal, is designed to highlight the sport's international appeal and popularity. The pre-meet news conference is even being held at the United Nations, and the meet will be televised live by the NBC Sports Network and Universal Sports ? a rarity for a sport struggling for ways to make itself more viewer-friendly.

The Iranians, who will be competing in the U.S. for the first time in 10 years, will also compete against the Americans at an exhibition in Los Angeles on May 19.

"In this crisis, we all stick together. Wrestlers maybe can do, sometimes, what politicians cannot," said Nenad Lalovic, the acting president of FILA, the sport's governing body. "We love our sport, and we are united to save it."

If there's one thing that the U.S., Russian and Iran have in common, it's a proud tradition of wrestling success and a deep passion for the sport that's been re-ignited by the IOC.

The Americans have won more Olympic medals in wrestling than any other country. When put in certain context, it can be argued that the U.S. wrestling team has been more successful than any other American Olympic team.

The Russians are now the world's premier wrestling nation. They won 11 medals in the recent London Olympics, including four golds, when no other nation claimed more than six medals.

The Russians were furious at the IOC's recommendation, and their angst over the sport's Olympic future stretches all the way to the top.

"The removal from the Olympic program of traditional forms of sports, which were its basis from the beginning and were in the program of the Olympic Games even in the time of ancient Greece ... is unjustified," Russian president Vladimir Putin said in March.

But wrestling holds a place in Iranian culture that likely exceeds that of even the U.S. and Russia.

It's often been said that wrestling is the national sport of Iran, where it doesn't have to compete with the likes of baseball, American football and hockey. The Iranians won three golds in London, backed by a fan section more boisterous than any other nation.

Tehran also served as the first place for the international wrestling community to come together and start formulating a plan to save its Olympic status.

The first major meet of the year, the World Cup, was held in Tehran roughly a week after the IOC decision, and the world's top 10 wrestling nations ? including the U.S., Russia and Iran ? met to discuss how to respond to the IOC.

U.S. Olympic champion Jordan Burroughs said the fans inside the arena were overwhelmingly supportive of the competitors, regardless of what country they wrestled for.

"It was probably the best wrestling venue, in terms of fan support and excitement, that I've ever been a part of," Burroughs said after the World Cup. "We're competitors on the mat. But with the decision by the IOC, now everyone is coming together."

The New York and Los Angeles exhibitions highlight a busy week for wrestling. FILA, the sport's international governing body, will meet in Moscow on Saturday to discuss major changes designed to improve wrestling's standing with the IOC.

The matches in New York and Los Angeles won't count for much more than pride. But wrestling officials are hoping to show the IOC and the world that a sport which can bring three such powerful but often clashing nations together is one worthy of a spot in the Olympic Games.

In fact, a photo of Burroughs and Iranian wrestler Sadegh Saeed Goudarzi locked arm-in-arm on the medal stand in London has become a symbolic image on social media sites for the movement to save Olympic wrestling.

"It is an exciting opportunity for wrestling to show the world its ability to bring together nations of different political, cultural and geographic backgrounds," USA Wrestling Executive Director Rich Bender said in announcing the New York meet last month.
