Hill aides: White House recalculates spending cuts

(AP) ? The White House budget office is recalculating how to apply automatic spending cuts for a handful of agencies, freeing up almost $4 billion for the Pentagon and another $1 billion or so for homeland security and NASA.

Capitol Hill aides familiar with the White House changes say the administration has identified almost $5 billion in cuts that can be restored under its reading of the arcane budget rules governing the across-the-board cuts, known as sequestration.

The calculations would restore $5 billion of the scheduled $85 billion in automatic sequestration cuts.

At issue are accounts that were cut more deeply under a full-year funding bill enacted in March than they would have been under the across-the-board cuts.

The aides required anonymity because they weren't allowed to discuss a private briefing publicly.

Newtown board mulls plans for Sandy Hook school

NEWTOWN, Conn. (AP) ? Newtown officials struggled Friday night to move toward a decision on what to do with the elementary school where 20 first-graders and six educators were shot to death in December, after teachers expressed grief and frustration during a closed-door session before a public meeting was held.

A task force of 28 local elected officials had been set to possibly vote on a recommendation to the local school board but continued the discussion to next Friday.

The panel had narrowed a list of choices to renovating Sandy Hook Elementary School, tearing it down and constructing a new building at the same site or building a new school on nearby property.

But several teachers told the task force Friday evening that they felt they were being left out of the process, and some said it would be too traumatic to ever work on the property again, according to task force members and school district staff who described the private session.

The panel then went into a public session and discussed other sites for a new school that previously had been ruled out, which upset some of the nearly 90 people who packed the meeting room, which had only about 25 chairs.

"I'm very confused," said Newtown resident Janet Ziperstein, who has two children who attended Sandy Hook. "It's very difficult to watch this process."

Some task force members also said they weren't sure where the process was heading. First Selectwoman Pat Llodra said time was a concern, because officials want to get a funding plan to state lawmakers before the legislative session ends next month.

Residents have mixed opinions on what should be done with the school.

Brian Engel, whose 6-year-old daughter, Olivia, died in the Dec. 14 shootings, told the task force that he and his wife want the village of Sandy Hook to have an elementary school but at a different location. He said he didn't want Olivia's younger brother to ever have to walk into the building where the massacre took place.

"We do want him to go to Sandy Hook School, but at an alternate location ? not where his sister died," Engel said after the meeting.

The 430 children who survived the shootings are now attending a remodeled school in the neighboring town of Monroe that has been renamed Sandy Hook Elementary School. A few parents said Friday night they didn't want to send their children to that school for much longer.

Other residents favor renovating the existing school. Some want a new school built in Sandy Hook. Others want officials to consider using town property in other parts of Newtown for a new school.

Two psychologists, Melissa Brymer and Jill Barron, told the task force that officials in other towns where mass shootings have occurred have grappled with the same problems in deciding what to do with the shooting site. They said making that decision can be a difficult and painful process because of the strong feelings and different viewpoints.

Columbine High School in Colorado, where two student gunmen killed 12 schoolmates and a teacher in 1999, reopened several months afterward. Crews removed the library, where most of the victims died, and replaced it with an atrium.

Virginia Tech converted a classroom building where a student gunman killed 32 people in 2007 into a peace studies and violence prevention center. And an Amish community in Pennsylvania tore down the West Nickel Mines Amish School and built a new school a few hundred yards away after a gunman killed five girls there in 2006.

On the morning of Dec. 14, gunman Adam Lanza, who had killed his mother at their Newtown home, went to Sandy Hook Elementary School and opened fire with an assault rifle, killing the 20 children and the six adults. He killed himself as police arrived at the school.

Police have not disclosed a possible motive for the killings. Law enforcement officials have said Lanza showed an interest in other mass killings and played violent video games.

Whatever choice the task force recommends will be sent to the town's Board of Education. Any plan would have to be approved by voters at referendum.

One panel member, Laura Roche, said there was no way she would support reopening the school.

"To me, that is always going to be a site where 26 people were murdered," she said.

Reddit's reworked privacy policy clarifies data handling, comes into effect May 15th

Reddit's reworked privacy policy clarifies data handling, comes into effect May 15th

The online Aladdin's cave and AMA forum Reddit has revealed a revamped privacy policy intended to make clear exactly how it deals with users' data. Legalese is notably absent, with credit for that going to Lauren Gelman, a legal consultant who's previously worked with the likes of the EFF -- a member, like Reddit, of the Internet Defense League. Essentially, the new policy is geared towards allowing "your participation to remain as anonymous as you choose," with the website stating that any of your data won't be shared without consent, unless the law requires it. Even then, you will be notified, with the only exception being a court order that prevents it. Reddit also notes that deleting your account will remove your username from posts and comments, but they will remain on the site. As only the last edit performed stays on the servers, however, you could trek back through your history and strip everything out to finalize your departure. There's much more in the announcement post and full policy document over at the source links, in case you wanna have a read before it all kicks in on May 15th.

SEC's new network with ESPN to debut in 2014

(AP) ? The Southeastern Conference and ESPN have announced a 20-year agreement to operate a SEC network that is scheduled to debut in August, 2014.

SEC Commissioner Mike Slive said Thursday the SEC network will produce 1,000 live events each year, including 450 televised on the network and 550 distributed digitally. Slive says the network will carry approximately 45 SEC football games "and a depth of content across all sports" each year.

No financial terms were released for the deal, which continues through 2034.

The announcement came at a news conference attended by Slive, ESPN President John Skipper, 32 SEC coaches and each of the league's 14 athletic directors.

ESPN senior vice president Justin Connolly says AT&T U-Verse has signed on as the network's first distributor.

Instagram's new 'Photos of You' feature lets users tag each other (video)

Instagram 35 lets users tag each other in photos

It was just a matter of time, really. We're well acquainted with Facebook letting us tag friends in our photos, so it's no shock that a similar feature has just spread to the social network's mobile darling, Instagram. The Android and iOS apps will both hit version 3.5 today, letting users tag others in a shot (whether or not they're human). A new Photos of You section has also been added to members' profiles, where you can see any photo linked to that account. As you might imagine, Instagram is already trying to head off potential privacy issues -- account holders have until May 16th before their Photos of You sections become public, and settings will let them turn down connections to any revealing (or simply inaccurate) images. The update is already available through the iTunes App Store and should be landing soon in Google Play. Hit up the source links if you've ever wanted to see how other Instagrammers see you.

Start your day with a beautiful MMA behind-the-scenes video

There are plenty of fight highlight videos, but few give such a stark, behind-the-scenes look as this one. Some of the moments carry more weight when you know the story behind them. Melvin Guillard hugging Donald Cerrone and coach Greg Jackson is a beautiful moment on its own, but takes on more significance when you know Guillard once trained with Jackson and Cerrone. The run-up to their fight was tense, but afterwards they shared a hug.

But most of the images need no background. Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva celebrating after he knocked out Alistair Overeem, Joe Benavidez giving a quick fist-bump through the curtain of the medical area, and Mauricio "Shogun" Rua not wanting to put a hat on his bruised, swollen head say enough.

Thanks to MMA Fighting.
