Free agency not quick cure-all for suffering NFL teams

Before all of us overreact -- and oh, how you know we will -- let's try to remember that NFL free agency is a minefield that's best served when picked through judiciously rather than romped across with the misguided notion that the billionaire with the fattest wallet can buy the next Lombardi Trophy.

Through the years, several teams, most notably the Washington Redskins under owner Dan Snyder, have failed on the field and against the salary cap after succumbing to their combination of wealth and impatience. They've been declared "winners" of free agency only to end up losers when the objective competition begins in the fall.

Just eight months ago, the Philadelphia Eagles were considered the NFL's "Dream Team." They came out of the 4 1/2-month lockout and dived checkbook-first into a hurried free-agency period. Hitting home runs like Hank and Harmon, the Eagles walked off with cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha (five years, $60 million), defensive end Jason Babin (five years, $28 million) and defensive tackle Cullen Jenkins (five years, $25 million), among others.

Meanwhile, the pundits were unkind to the New York Giants, another NFC East team, whose 2011 roster was built without General Manager Jerry Reese doing public cannonballs off the free-agency high dive.

One critic declared, "When your biggest news ... is signing [backup quarterback] David Carr, your team has issues. ... The Giants don't seem even interested in getting better through free agency."

As we all know, the Dream Team missed the playoffs and the Giants won their second Super Bowl in five seasons. Funny how often things work out that way in the NFL.

Funny how often the teams that build primarily through the draft -- the Green Bay Packers, Pittsburgh Steelers and New England Patriots included -- win championships.

But here we go again. Free agency starts at 3 p.m. Tuesday. Several teams will have considerable cap room on players that are unwanted by their current teams. Although a team's salary cap figure can change quickly based on transactions made before free agency, at least 15 teams reportedly will have more than $20 million to spend, led by the Cincinnati Bengals at about $58 million.

In the NFC North, the Chicago Bears lead the way with about $27 million. The Vikings are about $24 million under the cap after clearing close to $14 million with Saturday's release of veterans Steve Hutchinson, Anthony Herrera and Cedric Griffin. The Packers have about $10 million to spend, while the Detroit Lions have about $2 million or less.

Vikings General Manager Rick Spielman will be selective in free agency but definitely will kick the tires on some of the younger models. Recently given final say on all personnel matters, he's made it clear he prefers using draft picks to fuel a youth movement in the wake of last year's 3-13 season. Rebuilding that sort of foundation typically doesn't mesh with the quick-fix nature of free agency, but that doesn't mean Spielman won't be looking for younger players at positions of need, particularly cornerback, receiver and -- given Saturday's transactions -- guard.

"You're hoping that you're always drafting and keeping the guys you draft as you bring them up through your system," Spielman said. "If you're able to keep those guys, I think that's the best way to do it.

"But if there is a free agent out there that you think is unique, or a trade like when we traded for Jared Allen, if something pops up like that, then you try to go ahead and do that if you can."

By last Monday, a record 21 teams had used their franchise tags to significantly reduce the strength of what might have been the best free-agency class ever. But two days later, the Indianapolis Colts released four-time NFL MVP Peyton Manning into the free-agency pool. Because he was released, Manning was immediately available as the most high-profile free agent since Reggie White kicked off the current era of free agency in 1993.

Among those about to join Manning in signing a megadeal somewhere are Houston Texans defensive end/outside linebacker Mario Williams, an elite 27-year-old pass rusher who has missed 14 games because of injuries the past two seasons; New Orleans Saints left guard Carl Nicks, a 26-year-old multiple All-Pro destined to become the highest-paid guard in the league; San Diego Chargers receiver Vincent Jackson, a 6-5, 230-pound No. 1 receiver with a 17.5-yard career average per catch; and Packers quarterback Matt Flynn, whose two NFL starts include franchise single-game passing records for touchdowns (six) and yards (480) in a season-ending victory over the Lions.

Also available are receiver and Super Bowl hero Mario Manningham of the Giants, Colts receivers Pierre Garcon and Reggie Wayne, Saints receiver Marques Colston, Titans cornerback Cortland Finnegan and Chiefs cornerback Brandon Carr, a 25-year-old who had four interceptions in 2011.

Teams also have the option of dipping into restricted free agency. The most coveted player in that pool will be Steelers receiver Mike Wallace, a 25-year-old deep threat with 2,439 yards and 18 touchdowns over the past two seasons. The Steelers can match any offer and would get a first-round draft pick if they choose not to.

"This is a very big free-agency class," Atlanta Falcons General Manager Thomas Dimitroff said. "I do believe there is going to be a lot of movement because of the sheer numbers of this year's class. People really like that we're going back to having free agency before the draft, unlike last year. It allows us to make moves in free agency and it really takes the stress over the precariousness of how the draft is going to land."

Feel free to get excited as the flurry of activity begins on Tuesday. Just don't get too excited. Try to remember some of these guys:

??Larry Brown. The MVP of Super Bowl XXX, he went from the Dallas Cowboys to the Oakland Raiders in 1996. He had two interceptions in the Super Bowl and just one in his two seasons with the Raiders. He finally was released and rejoined the Cowboys.

??Javon Walker. In 2008, the Raiders simply ignored Walker's history of knee injuries with the Packers. They paid dearly for it. Walker made $21 million while lasting only 11 games in Oakland.

??Antonio Bryant. In 2010, the Bengals did the same thing when it came to Bryant's knee injury with the Cowboys the year before. Bryant was released along with his $8 million guarantee before the start of the season.

??Albert Haynesworth. The giant defensive tackle became the king of free-agent flops when he left the Tennessee Titans for the Redskins in 2009. He got a seven-year, $100 million deal with $41 million guaranteed.

Most, if not all of us, were very excited at the time. We instantly declared the Redskins a "winner" in free agency.

Haynesworth lasted two miserable seasons in Washington before being released. He had 6 1/2 sacks on two teams that finished last in the NFC East.

Cells may spare kidney transplant rejection drugs

WASHINGTON (AP) ? An experimental technique seems to be freeing some kidney transplant patients from having to take anti-rejection drugs.

Researchers transplanted certain cells from the kidney donor's bone marrow along with the new organ. Five of eight transplant recipients who tried the method so far were off immune-suppressing medication up to 2? years later, the researchers reported Wednesday.

The preliminary results were considered important enough to be published in the journal Science Translational Medicine even though the study still is under way, because the technique worked for patients who didn't have well-matched or related donors.

The idea is that if a sort of twin immune system takes root and lasts, it can allow the patient's body to accept the foreign organ and not attack it, said study co-author Dr. Suzanne Ildstad of the University of Lousville. Scientists call it chimerism.

"The most reliable indicator of really being successful at taking someone off immune-suppressing drugs is durable chimerism," says Ildstad, who teamed with doctors at Chicago's Northwestern Memorial Hospital for the research.

Transplant recipients usually must take multiple immune-suppressing pills for life to prevent rejection of their new organ. Those drugs cause lots of side effects, such as raising the risk of cancer and kidney damage.

Other scientists are attempting to tap bone marrow to induce immune tolerance, with varying success.

Ildstad's approach transfuses a special mix of bone marrow cells including blood-producing stem cells and another type named "facilitating cells" that are thought vital for a successful transplant. She filters out still other cells that can become too aggressive and cause a life-threatening disorder named graft-versus-host disease.

Transplant recipients had radiation and chemotherapy, not destroying their own bone marrow but tamping it down to make space for the donated cells, explained study co-author Dr. Joseph Leventhal, a Northwestern transplant surgeon. Five patients who had the dual immunity a year later were weaned off all drugs. Two others whose hybrid immunity faded are faring well using a low dose of one anti-rejection drug. One patient needed a repeat transplant after an infection and didn't get to try weaning.

Much more study is needed to find the best approach but "the results are striking," Dr. Tatsuo Kawai of Massachusetts General Hospital wrote in an accompanying editorial. He is part of a team that in 2008 reported the only other success with a small number of mismatched transplants.

Call me a sucker for marketing, but I love me some video game themed swag. So when I heard that there was a new Angry Birds baby product line by SwaddleDesigns, you bet I was there all googly eyes over its game chic cuteness.

I got the chance to review a couple of products that were provided to me, namely the long sleeve body suit and the marquisette swaddling blanket.?Both of these products arrived beautifully packed and labeled, which leaves me confident to purchase these items as a baby shower gift. The quality of the design as well as the quality of the items were excellent. The open weave cotton of the marquisette blanket is breathable to prevent overheating and soft to the touch, and the blanket itself is big enough to facilitate the swaddling process. I think the blanket is most comparable to the Aden + Anais muslin swaddling blanket, which was the hot ticket item at the time I had my own baby shower. What?s unique about the SwaddleDesigns swaddling blanket design is that it includes a 3-step swaddling instruction label sewn right on the blanket, a cheat sheet even overtired parents can understand.

I was lucky enough to chat with Lynette Damir, the founder of SwaddleDesigns, who was willing to answer some of my questions about starting a business.

How did you land the deal with Rovio Entertainment Ltd for an Angry Birds line?

Our ten year-old daughter introduced us to the Angry Birds game in 2010. My husband is a techie from the wireless industry, and based on our research, we concluded that Rovio?s Angry Birds had the potential to become a phenomenal success. I was confident that I could create fun, playful, colorful designs using the cute Angry Birds characters that would appeal to Angry Birds fans. We decided to approach Rovio and pitch the idea for Angry Birds Baby. Our timing was good ? the Rovio team was preparing to make a decision for their licensee for Angry Birds Baby items. We were thrilled to learn that the Rovio team selected SwaddleDesigns based on our quality.

Are you a fan of the game?

Oh yes! We love the game, for all the reasons that the game has become the #1 game in the world ? it is fun, easy to learn, engaging and reasonably challenging, and everyone in the family can play and have fun while learning about physics, strategy and using critical thinking skills. Sometimes we play independently, and sometimes we play as a family and take turns. We have all three games ? and we are so excited about Angry Birds Space!

Do you have a geek in your family?

My husband has a technical background as an EE and years in the mobile/wireless industry. My son is thirteen years old and he is very technical. He taught himself Flash, has taken classes to write computer games, and knows more about computers than I do ? perhaps, that makes him a geek, or perhaps, he is just a modern teenager. And my daughter has an aptitude to figure out new technical gadgets quite quickly. I come from a techie family myself ? a family of inventors and problem solvers. My dad worked in the Space program years ago. As a designer, an RN, and former professional ice skater, I am passionate about ice skating, health care and design, and I have spent numerous hours over the last several years researching thermoregulation. I guess you can say I?m a diverse kind of geek.

How would you describe the process of starting your own business?

My inspiration for starting our business was to help new parents calm and comfort their newborns and help their baby sleep so they could get more sleep. After I shared my idea for the Ultimate Swaddling Blanket with my husband (he actually jumped off the sofa and waved my drawing in the air claiming it was brilliant ? yes, I love that man), we evaluated the business possibilities and spent time developing the product. I did a lot of research, consulted with many medical experts including PhDs in the field of infant research. I sourced the key components, selected a manufacturing partner and we made early sales calls during the first year. We started shipping about one year after we decided to pursue the opportunity. Early on we decided that if we were going to start a business, it was going to be a business, and not a hobby. I was very focused on the brand and working to achieve our goals of helping parents comfort and care for their baby, designing and manufacturing quality products, and creating a brand that would be loved and trusted.

We worked hard and fast ? but, we did not rush or cut corners ? we believe it is important to do things right and delight our customers. We still ship the same blanket that was our very first product, SD-001, the Ultimate Receiving Blanket? premium preshrunk cotton flannel with delicate polka dots.

Our product was well loved from the beginning. The fact that our swaddling blankets fill an ongoing need and continues to help parents and babies, fuels the business. We?ve done very little advertising and have really grown by word of mouth ? by what I call the power of the Mommy Network ? a mom telling another mom how much our blanket helped her, her baby, her family, and how versatile the blanket is, what great quality it is and that it is a must-have for new parents.

When we created the company in 2002, swaddling was a lost art in our country and there was a real need for a well made and designed swaddling blanket. Around that same time, Dr. Karp published his book, The Happiest Baby on the Block, which featured swaddling as the cornerstone to calming a fussy baby, and a study was published in Pediatrics that proved that swaddled babies sleep better. In the years prior to 2002, when I was visiting families with new babies in their homes, I observed two consistent problems that caused new parents to struggle when trying to swaddle. First, their blanket was too small or the wrong shape, and second, they could not remember how to make a good secure swaddle. Based on my research of the market at that time, I was unable to find any good swaddle blankets available. I used by healthcare back ground as a nurse and my design education from the Art Institute of Seattle to design a multi-use blanket that was the right size, shape and fabric and I included a pictorial instructional label showing how to make a good effective swaddle sewn to the edge of the blanket. We filed for a trademark and a patent to protect our design and intellectual property. Before we had our first production unit, we had closed our first customer ? a major hospital that purchased 4,000 blankets for their new parent departure gift. They loved the educational component of the blanket and understood the benefits of swaddling. In less than 2 years, we had been picked up by Nordstrom nationwide and soon after earned a position in the Inc 500 as one of the fastest growing companies in the USA.

Was there a period when you weren?t sure the business was going to make it? How did you deal with that?

We were concerned when the recession hit in 2008, it was a scary time for everyone. However, the Spring before the recession hit, we had raised money to help the business grow. We held on and continued to innovate, invest and create, and we?ve thrived. People continued to buy baby products and they want good long lasting value which our products provide. People associate the SwaddleDesigns brand with quality and lasting value and this has helped our business to make it even in tough economic times.

Do you have any tips to anyone starting or thinking about starting their own business?

Be prepared to work very hard and be very nimble to survive and thrive. Do your research. Make sure that you have access to the funding that you will require to be successful. Make sure that you have a partner/founding team that has diverse skills, a commitment to quality, a common vision and good honest work ethic. It also helps to have a supportive significant other.

You have a patent pending on your Ultimate Swaddling Blanket design, how difficult is the patenting process?

We worked with a very capable attorney and law firm that specializes in intellectual property. We have pending patents and a multitude of trademarks and copyrights. It is important to have the right team in place to help navigate the intellectual property landscape in the US and abroad.

You founded SwaddleDesigns in 2002, how will you be celebrating your business?s 10 year anniversary this year?

We are looking forward to our 10 year anniversary! It?s hard to believe it?s been 10 years ? it?s gone by very quickly. 2012 will be a record year for SwaddleDesigns in many ways. It is our first year in our much larger new HQ facility, and I finally will move my design studio out of our house! We are rolling out the Angry Birds Baby line, Disney Classic collection and Disney It?s A Small World collection, along with several of my personal collections ? Jewel Tones, the Sterling line and the elegant French palette inspired Taupe Gray Collection.

We are expanding into multiple new countries and expanding our distribution. And in conjunction with our partners, we look forward to the celebrations to kick-off our 10th year. In many ways, our company is a great example of how working hard and focusing on quality and our brand can lead to extraordinary and unanticipated opportunities ? when we started the company in 2002, we never imagined that in 2012 we would be rolling out a collection based on the number one mobile game in the world and two stylish Disney collections ? but, we are.

I have to admit I was never capable to swaddle. My husband and I could not?understand why a simple three step process was beyond the grasp of two?highly educated people! Why oh why is it so hard for new parent to grasp?swaddling?
